On October 5, 1535, Jacques Cartier visited the village of
Hochelaga, becoming the first European to “discover” what is
now the Montréal area. Or was he? According to Toronto amateur
historian Donald Wiedman, Leifur Eiríksson and his fellow Norsemen
were there some 500 years before the French.
I accompanied Donald and Malcolm Olafson recently to St-François,
Laval, Québec – up the Rivière des Prairies shoreline across from north
end Montreal – to trace an ancient Iroquoian/Mohawk portage route that
exists today. There, Donald pointed out boulders along the natural path
he says are clearly described, in exact succession, in The Vinland sagas’
story of Tykir the Southerner. He also showed us landmarks matching the
sagas of Þorvaldur’s death, the Skræling leader’s dropped axe, Freydís’s
exposed breast, and teen Norseman Þorbrandur Snorrason’s final resting
place in nearby Terrebonne, Québec.
Exploring and “discovering” nautical directions referenced in the
Vinland sagas since 2013, from the west coast of Newfoundland, around
inside the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and up the St. Lawrence River, Donald
makes his convincing arguments on his blog www.lavalhallalujah.com.
Interestingly, while researching to prove Leif the Lucky had anchored in
the calm waters inside the mouth of the Rivière des Milles Isle along the
north shoreline of Laval, he also surprisingly found that historical details
matched up there, too, to show that Jacques Cartier followed the same
ancient portage route as Leifur Eiríksson, some 500 years later.
