Scandinavian Cultural Centre, 764 Erin
St. Sharpen your axes and shake out your
sheep skins for the annual gathering the
of the “warring” Viking clans. This year we
celebrate the Harvest God Freyr, the god of
bountiful yields, wealth, peace and virility.
Skalds, singers and poets will recite sagas
and poems of the long history of the Viking
people. Musicians will get people dancing
and everyone will eat and drink too much.
Games of skill will keep our women,
warriors and young boys active. Everyone
will wear their finest clothes and jewellery.

Gallery. At a moment in time in American
culture when debate rages over what is real
news and what is fake news, Mystic Seaport
Museum brings back to the limelight a
controversy from more than 50 years ago
that rocked the scientific, historical and
cultural realms of U.S. society. Not only is
the map on display, but there's a fun exhibit
showing how people in the US reacted when
the map was made public in 1965.

25 Oct: SHE DID WHAT? Our October
Lestrarfélagið Gleym-mér-ei is just that.
Two women created books that will ensure
people are not forgotten. The discussion
will centre on what it takes to assemble,
write and publish. Our guest authors
are Agnes Bardal Comack and Christine
Hjartarson Richardson.
Agnes wrote Knowing Your Family
Connections: A Bardal Family History. Her
many articles over the years form the basis
of her book. It is also a glimpse of Icelandic
Winnipeg.
Christine wrote When the Ticking Stops. It
is a memoir on her late beloved husband
Allan Richardson. Allan was a teacher in
Lundar for many years.
Both books are life accomplishments!

9 TO 19 OCTOBER
This October, one of Iceland’s most notable
literary Icelandic poets and authors, Ófeigur
Sigurðsson, will tour the United States to
discuss his new book and accomplished
career. The book tour is set to launch the
English translation of his best-selling novel,
Öræfi: The Wasteland. The novel follows
Bernhardt Fingerberg after his treacherous
solo adventure climbing Vatnajökull Glacier.
In desperate need of care, he finds himself
in the care of a doctor who soon starts to
question Fingerberg’s motives for taking
on this dangerous task. Sigurðsson’s novel
won the Icelandic Book prize, the Icelandic
Booksellers’ prize, and became the best
selling literary book of 2014-2015 in Iceland.
Ófeigur Sigurðsson was born in Reykjavík in
1975 and attended the University of Iceland
where he received his bachelor’s degree
in Philosophy. In addition to writing Öræfi:
The Wasteland, he has published six books
of poetry and his other novel, Jon. He is
most well known for being a leader in the
movement to the reshape Icelandic poetry
and is noted as “one of the best writers of
his generation" (Amazon).
From New York to San Francisco to Texas,
Ófeigur Sigurðsson will be sharing his novel
with the United States for the first time.
