Frequent, especially in the highland, in the community of Empetreto-Vac-
cinietum.
In snow-patches mostly in the f. pygmaea Ostf. It is sometimes difficult to
settle, whether such forms are genetically fixed or merely an accomodation to
the direct insolation or to an enormous transpiration. Such a form was
described by Otruba (Sbor. Klubu prír. v Brné za r. 1927, Brno 1928, pl. 70)
from Moravia as f. microphyllum Otruba: folia parvula vix 0.5—1.5 cm
longa. Rohlena (Véda prírodní 18:7:209) describes a form from Central
Bohemia with 4—9 mm long and 3—5 mm broad leaves; they are about as
large as the Icelandic p}'gmaeous forms.
Normal, broadleaved forms of V. Myrtillus may be found on Reykjanes only
in the shadow of the copses or in lava fissures. Both forms have numerous
transitional forms as e. g.: a form from Gullkistugjá 120 m, 21. VII. 37 in a
lava fissure, 5 m deep: leaves (7)—14.6 (20 mm) broad, (12)—27.3—(39.5)
mm long (average from 30 speciment); Grindaskarð 300 m, snow patch, SW
exposition, 23. VII. 37: transition to the microphyllous form: leaves (5)—7—
(10) mm broad, (7)—9.4—(13 mm) long (average from 20 samples).

Common. Flowers closed in rain. One average individual with a cushion
about 10—25 cm 'n diameter has ca. 20 scapes, each scape ca. (14)—29—-(38)
flowers (average from 15 samples), altogether ca. 560 flowers and diaspores.
