Fall is my favorite time of year in Iceland. It’s when nature gets dressed in the colors of the rainbow, and when the weather is frequently tran-
quil—so uncommon here in the Republic. The red of the evening sky also appears sharper than at other times of the year. Perhaps because the
air is so crisp and cool, or the sun is lower in the sky than in the height of summer. It’s when day and night merge into gentle blue nocturnal
hues. Fall is also the season when the Icelandic sheep are herded from the mountains, when the first snow falls, and when the days are rapidly
becoming shorter. The most beautiful place to experience fall is in the east, where tall trees and high mountains stand on their heads in the calm
waters of the fjords, wearing the white caps of the first snow. Fall is the wonderful season that helps prepare us for the dark, yet enchanting,
Icelandic winter. PS
