way to prepare
a trip to new
destination?
Read a guide book, like
Lonely Planet, which seems to
rule, sending all the tourists
to the same waterfall or
restaurant. Or order a book
of images of the country;
that way finding the places
you would like to visit. But
one critical thing is missing in
photo books about Iceland. That is the wind. Which rules.
That is for sure.
No, the best way to prepare a visit to a new country
is to read the literature. Then you can feel the heartbeat
of the nation. And few books paint as good a portrait of
Icelanders as Independent People, by Nobel Prize winner
Halldór Laxness. Today, we have a whole new generation
of exciting writers, for example Arnaldur Indridason,
Audur Ava Ólafsdóttir, Yrsa Sigurdardóttir, Sjón, Gyrdir
Elíasson and Jón Kalman Stefánsson. Writers who provide
you with a big window into modern Iceland.
And this October, Iceland will be guest of honor at the
world’s biggest book fair in Frankfurt.
But Iceland is more than just a mountain, a lava field,
literature and Björk.
The music scene here is unbelievable. And listening to
local music is another good way to learn and understand
more about the country you are visiting. Yes, the music
scene is more than just Björk and Sigur Rós. Amiina,
Mugison, Gusgus, Ólöf Arnalds, Sin Fang Bous, Jónsi,
Hjaltalín and even the grand old Megas, are all great artists
with a unique style.
And every October, for more than ten years, Iceland
Airwaves, a three-day music festival, has been the perfect
way to see new and exciting bands mixed in with more
established ones, in Reykjavík’s clubs and concert halls.

learn more about Iceland.
