The concrete building behind Austurstraeti
22 was built in 1919-1920 in the Jugend
architectural style. It was a movie theater called
Nýja Bíó. Seating 500 people, it was Iceland’s
largest gathering place. Later, it became a night-
club, finally burning down in 1998. It is now a
three-story building, painted vibrant red, each
floor approximately 200 square meters in size.
It hosts a two-story restaurant serving inno-
vative dishes made from the finest Icelandic
ingredients straight from the farmer and the
fisherman, its décor inspired by the Icelandic
landscape.
