“I love to experiment with color combinations; it’s
amazing how adding a single colored bead can
make a necklace strikingly beautiful—or quite awful, in
which case I simply start over,” smiles Hlín Reykdal whose
unique, handmade necklaces, bracelets, purses and hair
ornaments are now spotted on stylish ladies from the
age of six to ninety-two. “I hand paint the different-sized
wooden beads in all kinds of colors. The silk I use is also
dyed by hand.”
Reykdal graduated in 2009 from the Iceland Academy
of Arts with a degree in fashion design. Before turning to
accessories, she made collars and bows that were sold in
Reykjavík and Copenhagen. “Fashion design allows me to
work with materials, colors and form, and of course the
human body; not to mention all the interesting, creative
people. I have been painting and designing ever since I
can remember. Both my parents are artists so my child-
hood was characterized by attending gallery openings
and spending holidays exploring art museums. We never
went to Disney World!”
This fall, Reykdal will present her creations in New York
and Paris. She will be also be adding pretty one-off wool-
en sweaters to the selection, embellished with beads and
pompoms. We can’t wait.
Available at GK, Kiosk and Mýrin.
