Kraum was the nation’s first store dedicated entirely to Icelandic design. Kraum’s flagship store is located just off Ingólfstorg square in downtown Reykjavík and has breathed new life into Reykjavík’s oldest building, which was originally built to ac- commodate textile production from Icelandic wool. The elegant store features work from over 200 Icelandic designers including textiles, jewelry, household items and a variety of other practical pieces, all selected by a profes- sional committee to ensure a fair representation of Iceland’s best. Kraum, meaning simmer, does not stop there. Now it has expanded by opening three new boutiques where you can purchase unique design items. The boutiques are located at the Reykjavík Art Museum in Hafnarhús, at Kjarvalsstadir Museum and at the Museum of Design and Applied Art in Gardabaer. “There has been an explosion in Icelandic design in recent years and our stores reflect the diversity of that. When we started we had items from about 60 designers but now we represent about 200,” says Kraum’s founder, Halla Bogadóttir. A lot of Icelandic design is influenced by the special features of the island’s nature. What could go better with your felted wool ball gown than a cod-skin purse? Adalstraeti 10. kraum.is National Gallery of Iceland – FEMME by Louise Bourgeois Located in an old freezing plant by the Tjörnin pond, the National Gallery of Iceland is the city’s prime venue for both local and international art. This sum- mer, they will exhibit the works of one of the 20th century’s most influential female artists, louise Bourgeois (1911-2010). FEMME features 28 works—mainly installations and sculptures, but also paintings, drawings and textiles—by the art- ist, who mastered both sculpture and installation art, prints, textiles and writing. The National Gallery also brings you rarely seen works by jóhannes sveinsson Kjarval, one of Iceland’s greatest artists of all time. KJARVAL, from the collection of Jón Thorsteinsson and Eyrún Gudmundsdóttir shows the artist’s take on the majesty of Icelandic nature—perfect before heading out there yourself. Both exhibitions run until September 11th. listasafn.is Farmers Market traditional—the new modern The young Icelandic fashion design company Farmers Market has raised a few eyebrows lately in the international design world for its high-quality knitwear and concept. Established in 2005 by an Icelandic couple—a designer and a musician— Farmers Market draws its design inspiration from the Icelandic heritage where, for centuries, man and animals have cohabited in harmony challenged by harsh nature. Its style has been described as revitalized Icelandic traditional design, combining Nordic design elements with chic modernity. To buy Farmers Market clothes and ac- cessories you can either visit their own funky little shop in the old harbor area (about a 20 minute walk from the Reykjavík city center) or one of their resellers listed on their website farmersmarket.is.
