8 ICELAND REVIEW 0302 Culture Club 05 Ólöf the SongStreSS SuDDen elevation Ólöf arnalds one little indian released by one little Indian, Sudden elevation is the third studio album by Ólöf arnalds, and her first that’s entirely in english. Ólöf is a great songwriter and her voice “can silence a room,” as the new york times put it. Ólöf’s floating voice harmonizes with the harmonies that are so simple and complex at the same time. Inspired by folk music, the album’s strongest cut is the opener ‘German Fields.’ Sudden elevation is an album which further elevates Ólöf’s indie folk rock career and it looks as if she will reach new heights still, even after having been named one of Q magazine’s ‘Most exciting people in Music’ in 2010. PS anniverSarY Kirsuberjatréð vesturgata 4, 101 Reykjavík kirs.is annual Celebration of the artS reyKjavíK arts Festival 2013 art, Space & audience museums and galleries in the Reykjavík metropolitan area a golden Short at CanneS the 27th annual reykjavík arts Festival, entitled ‘art, space & audience,’ was celebrated in Iceland’s capital May 17 to june 2 with a wealth of concerts, performances and exhibitions. If you missed the festival, fret not, for a number of exhibitions will run through june or even throughout the summer. these include art = text = art by 50 international artists from the collection of sally & Wynn Kramarsky at the hafnarborg Center of Culture and Fine arts, Disappearances by 40 artists from 15 small european states at the national Gallery of Iceland, collages by Magnús Kjartansson at hverfisgallerí, the Sound of Bugle in a Shoebox, a performance retrospective by Magnús pálsson, and interval by huginn Þór arason & andrea Maack, an exhibition on fragrance, at reykjavík art Museum, hafnarhús. ESA Design store Kirsuberjatréð, run by 11 artists and designers, celebrated its 20th anniversary in late april. the former general store was housed in the 130-year-old building on Vesturgata 4, downtown reykjavík, for 105 years until daily goods were exchanged for arts, crafts and design in 2003 when a group of Icelandic women opened Kirsuberjatréð on the premises. Wisely they did not change the interior, which now celebrates its 90th anniversary. the arts and the crafts, though, are brand new. PS 04 Icelandic short film hvalfjörður by director Guðmundur arnar Guðmundsson received the special Distinction ex-aequo award for shorts at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, May 15-26. the film, named after a fjord in southwest Iceland, features the relationship between two brothers who live at a small farm with their parents and the dramatic events which change their lives forever. ágúst Örn B. Co-producers are sagafilm, Icelandic filmmaker rúnar rúnarsson and Darin Mailand-Mercado and jacob oliver Krarup from Denmark. this is the third time that an Icelandic short competes in the shorts category at Cannes.
