ICELAND REVIEW 85 natural treasures The Environment Agency of Iceland (EAI) lists 104 protected areas, divided into national parks, nature reserves, country parks and natural monuments. The lat- est additions are the waterfalls Álafoss in Southwest Iceland and Tungufoss in the central highlands, which became natural monuments in April. Twenty of the 104 protected areas are on the country’s red- list of endangered areas, including the popular travel destination Lake Mývatn in Northeast Iceland. The EAI is set to improve the condition of these areas; sev- eral, such as Dyrhólaey promontory in South Iceland, have already been moved to the orange list thanks to their efforts.
