ICELAND REVIEW 29
The size, 5,663 km2 (2,186 miles2), is roughly
the same as the Canadian province of Prince
Edward Island, or five-times-larger than New
York City metropolitan area, stretching from
Sólheimajökull glacier in the west to Skeiðarár-
sandur desert in the east. Population 941 or 942.
Here you have the endless beaches of the south
coast, endless lava fields from Laki, covered in
green. The lake Langisjór, and a beautiful mountain
ridge called Fögrufjöll.
There are two towns, Kirkjubæjarklaustur and
Vík, three volcanoes, four lighthouses, five lakes, six
big rivers, but only seven churches.
The best season to visit Vestur-Skaftafellssýsla:
any. You are always welcomed by wind. Clear skies?
It depends, but if it’s raining or snowing, just wait.
Vestur-Skaftafellssýsla knows how to surprise even
the most seasoned traveler. *
