ICELAND REVIEW 93
Walking on Sólheimajökull glacier.
At Landmannalaugar.
of South Iceland. The region boasts dozens of places
you can go to meet Icelandic horses—and not only to
ride them in the truly unforgettable scenery, but also at
horse shows and acrobatic riding displays.
WILD AND WONDROUS NATURE
The locals put their artistic streak down to the land-
scape and the great natural variety around them. In fact,
everything that is South Iceland is deeply connected to
the landscape: the food, the horses, the glaciers, the
volcanoes—all truly inspiring.
South Iceland is the perfect destination for autumn
and winter travel. For a start, it’s an ideal place to
glimpse the northern lights. In rural South Iceland there
is so little light pollution that if the conditions are right,
you can simply step outside your door and—if you’re
lucky—there they are, dancing in the dark sky above
you!
The region is easily accessible with good roads and
regular winter snow plowing (when necessary). South
Iceland is served by bus and coach services year-round.
Imagine yourself standing on a black beach, with the
Atlantic Ocean’s mighty waves crashing in behind you.
The glaciers and volcanoes stand proud and stark in
front of you and the magnificent colorful northern lights
streak their way between the thousands of stars above
your head. That’s an experience of power and purity.
Welcome to South Iceland!
