East Iceland is home to some charming
towns and villages, offering all the ameni-
ties you could need.
Egilsstaðir is the region’s hub and the
biggest inland town in Iceland. Here you’ll
find supermarkets, a liquor store, hotels,
restaurants and fun extras including an
outdoor swimming pool and a heritage
museum.
Nearby Seyðisfjörður is a picturesque
village of colorful old wooden houses,
which has become a magnet for creative
souls from all over Iceland and overseas.
As a result, there are quirky cafés, craft
shops, studios, a technical museum and
visual arts center.
Other towns you won’t regret checking
out include Vopnafjörður for its emigration
exhibition and interactive farm museum;
Neskaupstaður for its Easter Cave, three
museums and famous pool; Reyðarfjörður
for its surprising war museum; and
Stöðvarfjörður for Petra’s famous rare
stone collection.
Then there’s the ‘French’ village of
Fáskrúðsfjörður, where the historic influ-
ence of French fishermen can still clearly
be seen today. And in the summer you
can still take the old gravel coastal road
from Reyðarfjörður, which is a breathtak-
ing ride.
GO EAST
Getting to East Iceland is easy. There are
regular flights from Reykjavík to Egilsstaðir
which take just an hour, and the whole re-
gion is served by good roads and coach
connections to the rest of the country.
The only international ferry service to
Iceland docks at Seyðisfjörður, which
means you can bring your own car or
camper to East Iceland, directly from Den-
mark or the Faroe Islands. There will also
be direct flights to Egilsstaðir from Lon-
don with UK travel company Discover the
World this summer!
