EAST ICELANDSPECIAL PROMOTION
Only an hour’s flight from Reykjavík, Egilsstaðir is the
main town in East Iceland. Located in an area called
Fljótsdalshérað (Hérað for short), it’s home to a friend-

VATNAJÖKULL NATIONAL PARK
Home to Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull National Park is
something you must experience. The park is home to many of
the country’s best-known natural highlights, including Kverkfjöll,
Hafra hvammagljúfur, Hvannalindir and Snæfell. Be sure to
check out the exhibition in Snæfellsstofa Visitor Center while
you’re there.
NATURAL PARADISE
Egilsstaðir and its surroundings have long had a reputation
for stunning nature. The local waterfalls, lakes and rivers are
some of the many attractions for outdoor recreation. There are
many pleasant walking routes and hikers will love exploring the
mountain ranges and connecting with Icelandic nature. Other
outdoor recreational options in the area include golfing, swim-
ming, skiing, cycling, horseback riding and a wide range of fish-
ing opportunities in the region’s rivers and lakes.
LAGARFLJÓT WYRM
Get to know the tale of the living legend in Lake Lagarfljót.
Probably the most famous resident in Hérað is the Wyrm and
there’s no need to be alarmed if you ever see it arch its back
through the lake’s surface. Information signs about the Lagar-
fljót Wyrm can be found at rest stops by Hafursá, Atlavík, Klifá
and Hrafnkellsstaðir, all of which have a clear view of the lake
where the Wyrm might appear.
REINDEER AND DIVERSE WILDLIFE
Reindeer can be found throughout the region. Why not book
a trip with Reindeer Safaris? Whether you want to shoot game
or just pictures, you will find plenty of worthy targets in Hérað,
including ducks, ptarmigans, geese and even seals, as well as
reindeer. All year round, there are tour companies offering a
great variety of organized excursions to create your perfect trip
to explore East Iceland.
