90 ICELAND REVIEW
Seyðisfjörður town is largely made up of colorfully-paint-
ed wooden houses, nestled around the busy harbor and
the beautiful blue church. Despite having just 653 inhabi-
tants, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the good range of
eating options available—many of which take full advan-
tage of fresh East Iceland ingredients.
The town is famous for its artistic and cultural flair and is
home to a visual arts center, several studios and galleries, an
industrial museum and a whole bunch of colorful characters
from around the world. The late great German-Swiss artist,
Dieter Roth even called Seyðisfjörður home for a while.
NATURAL PLAYGROUND
Away from the town, Seyðisfjörður offers unforgettable
hiking opportunities in this steeply mountainous fjord of a
thousand different panoramic views. In fact, Seyðisfjörður
is a paradise for those who enjoy nature and the outdoors,
and the town’s central camp site is a firm favorite with many
visitors.
For the tent-phobics out there, Seyðisfjörður also boasts
a surprising number of good hotels and guesthouses and is
a great base of operations from which to explore beautiful
East Iceland.
Wherever you stay, you’re guaranteed to find that Seyðis-
fjörður is a stunning place to arrive at, and a very relaxing
place to spend some quality time surrounded by art, cul-
ture, nature and improbably-scenic mountains.
