UTAH ICELANDERS TO CELEBRATE
CENTENARY
This year in June the Icelandic As-
sociation of Utah is sponsoring a three-
day festival to commemorate the ar-
rival of the first Icelandic settlers at
Spanish Fork, one hundred years ago.
Mr. Petur Eggerz, of the Icelandic
Legation at Washington, D.C., will be
Iceland’s official representative at the
celebrations.
The descendants of the Icelanders
in Utah have down through the years
held an Icelandic celebration August
the second, and last year’s event was
especially well attended. It was during
that celebration that preparations
were started for the hundredth an-
niversary. A committee was elected
headed by John Y. Bearnson as pres-
ident, with vice-presidents Victor Leif-
son, Faye Bearnson and Byron Gelsi-
son. Secretary-treasurer is Lois B.
Christensen; publicity chairman Wil-
liam M. Johnson; and in charge of
musical events is Mrs. Thelma McKell.
The committee has been divided in-
to sub-committees who are in charge
of various phases of the program. The
event is being artistically and carefully
planned and promises to be outstand-
ing in every way. Publicity chairman,
Mr. Johnson sends the following in-
vitation to all people of Icelandic
descent:
“To commemorate the establishment
of the first permanent Icelandic settle-
ment in America, “The Icelandic As-
sociation of Utah extends a gracious
invitation to all people of Icelandic
descent to join with them in the Ice-
landic Centennial Celebration to be
held June 15-16-17 at Spanish Fork,
Utah.
