32 THE ICELANDIC CANADIAN Spring 1955 UTAH ICELANDERS TO CELEBRATE CENTENARY This year in June the Icelandic As- sociation of Utah is sponsoring a three- day festival to commemorate the ar- rival of the first Icelandic settlers at Spanish Fork, one hundred years ago. Mr. Petur Eggerz, of the Icelandic Legation at Washington, D.C., will be Iceland’s official representative at the celebrations. The descendants of the Icelanders in Utah have down through the years held an Icelandic celebration August the second, and last year’s event was especially well attended. It was during that celebration that preparations were started for the hundredth an- niversary. A committee was elected headed by John Y. Bearnson as pres- ident, with vice-presidents Victor Leif- son, Faye Bearnson and Byron Gelsi- son. Secretary-treasurer is Lois B. Christensen; publicity chairman Wil- liam M. Johnson; and in charge of musical events is Mrs. Thelma McKell. The committee has been divided in- to sub-committees who are in charge of various phases of the program. The event is being artistically and carefully planned and promises to be outstand- ing in every way. Publicity chairman, Mr. Johnson sends the following in- vitation to all people of Icelandic descent: “To commemorate the establishment of the first permanent Icelandic settle- ment in America, “The Icelandic As- sociation of Utah extends a gracious invitation to all people of Icelandic descent to join with them in the Ice- landic Centennial Celebration to be held June 15-16-17 at Spanish Fork, Utah.
