THE ICELANDIC CANADIAN
SUMMER 1973
in January. The interest and help from
the staff and school division were much
appreciated. Two members of the
Reykjavik Band, Gudmundur Nor-
dahl and Vilberg Juliusson, donated
eight Icelandic textbooks, and Mr.
Juliusson also presented two child-
ren’s textbooks on his visit to the
library last summer. Consul-General
Grettir L. Johannson loaned two
films on Iceland for use in the classes.

THORRABLOT and THORRA-
MOT
borri on the Icelandic calendar is
the month of the waning of winter.
In the old Icelandic calendar, borri is
entered as beginning between the 9th
and 16th of January; in the new style
calendar, 1873, the first day of borri is
January 24th and the last day, Febru-
ary 22. In heathen times, borra-blot
was the great sacrifice marking the
beginning of borri. Today, borra-mot
(Thorramot) is a gathering celebrat-
ing borri.
