43 THE ICELANDIC CANADIAN SPRING 1974 whose translation of Njals saga (The Story of Burnt Njal) may be said to have become a classic, to name but one of his translations from Icelandic into English. Cowan does not exag- gerate when he says: (p. 133): “Da- sent’s contribution to Icelandic studies in the British Isles is immense by any standards.” Included in the volume of Studia Islandica under review is a concise summary in Iceland by Hermann Pals- son. The 32. volume of the series is in Icelandic and is entitled Helgi Skuli Kjartansson: Myndmal Passiusalm- anna. The opening of the short Eng- lish summary sufficiently indicates the contents of the study: ‘‘The present thesis (written for the B.A. degree at the University of Ice- land 1971) is a study of the 50 Passion Hymns by the Rev. Hallgrimur Peturs- son (1614-74), focused on style, esp. imagery. Metrical form is briefly described”. Both because of the fact that it is in Iceland and its highly specialized nature, this study has only limited appeal to the readers of The Icelandic Canadian. However, it is a noteworthy contribution to the literature on the Rev. Hallgrimur Petursson and his famed Passion Hymns, which have been of such a long-lasting and deep influence in the religious life of the Icelandic nation, an influence which also encompassed many among the older generations of Icelanders in Am- merica. The 300th Anniversary of Hall- grimur Petursson’s death will, of course, be duly commemorated in Ice- land this year. The Studia Islandica, is published by the University of Iceland, Faculty of Libereal Arts and the Icelandic Cultural Fund. THE I.D.D.E.
