54 THE ICELANDIC CANADIAN SPRING 1974 IN THE NEWS Assistant Deputy Minister, Attorney-General’s Dept. Attorney General Howard Pawley has announced the appointment of Gilbert Raymond Goodman, Q.C., director of prosecutions for Manitoba, as an assistant deputy minster in his department. Mr. Goodman will be responsible for co-ordinating the provincial gov- ernment’s legislative program and will direct the progress of legislation from approval-in-principle by cabinet to its publication in the statutes. He will also report to the attorney- general on the activities of the Land Titles Office, the Office of Public Trustee and legislative counsel. His other duties will include sitting on the Remission Board, supervising legal research for proposed government programs, review reports by the Law Reform Commission and act as the minister’s liaison officer in policy mat- ters relating to that commission as well as the Human Rights Commission. “Essentially,” said Mr. Pawley, “Mr. Goodman will coordinate the legis- lative activities of the various depart- ments of government with a view to making whatever refinements that may be necessary. He has also indicated an interest in engaging in various special projects relating to planning and programming in the field of crim inal justice as well as prosecuting cer- tain special cases when the Legislature is not in session.” Mr. Goodman was born in Win- nipeg and graduated in law from the University of Manitoba in 1960. He articled first with White, Walker and Gilbert Raymond Goodman Irish and later with Inkster, Walker, Irish and Hughes before joining the Manitoba Attorney General’s Depart- ment in 1961 as a crown attorney. In 1968 he was appointed senior crown attorney in City of Winnpeg’s provin- cial judges court and director of pro- secutions for Manitoba in March 1969. Lie was named a Q.C. in the January 1, 1971 honors list. Mr. Goodman is the son of Gud- mundur and Johanna Goodman.
