128 THE ICELANDIC CANADIAN Vol. 56 #3 Joan Hibbert was born in Victoria, B.C. She became a pat of the Icelandic community when she married Thorsteinn (Steini) Hibbert of Vidir, Manitoba. In 1958, Steini and Joan bought the property known as “Ja[ri” (1876) on the west shore of Lake Winnipeg. This land, once owned by Johannes Jonasson and Halla Jonsdottir, became the Hibbert's summer home—the place where Joan renewed her lifetime interest in painting. The Prairie skies, the vastness of the land and the drama of the lake inspire her landscapes, while the old homesteads remind her of the sagas that are such an inherent part of the Icelandic culture. She finds her watercolours best enable her to express the spirit of the land and the people she has grown to know and appreciate. The back page
