The current governor general, Julie Payette, continued the tradition of several of her predecessors by welcoming people to tour the grounds of Rideau Hall, the viceregal residence. Various embassies and other organizations were set up in booths to promote outdoor activity during the long winter. For the first time, the party was scheduled to coincide with Ottawa’s annual Winterlude festival. Winter showed its force that day as the temperatures hit -20 Celsius or -4 Fahrenheit. But the thousands of attendees were warmed by servings of kjötsúpa, the traditional Icelandic lamb and vegetable soup. The embassy made 100 litres (26 U.S. gallons) of the delicacy; hungry Ottawans lapped it all up in two hours. Ambassador Pétur Ásgeirsson was out of the country on diplomatic duty, so the booth was staffed by Acting Head of Mission Ólöf Sigvaldadóttir and administrative assistant Ingrid White, ably assisted by volunteers from the local Friends of Iceland chapter. Governor-General Payette made an appearance thanking the embassy for its participation in the annual event. Escorting her was Chief of Protocol Stewart Wheeler, a former Canadian ambassador to Iceland. He and Ólöf greeted each other and caught up on old times. The pavilion was a hit with visitors, as many enthusiastically described their past trips to the island or expressed interest in going soon.
