Lögberg-Heimskringla - 15.03.2019, Blaðsíða 2
VISIT OUR WEBSITE LH-INC.CA 2 • Lögberg-Heimskringla • March 15 2019 There was no end to socializing and “goofing it up” at the photo booth, which was set up by photographer, Leif Norman. Leif came dressed for the occasion in red, white, and blue – the colours of the Icelandic flag. Even his saddle shoes were tri- coloured. The outfit would not have been complete without the “pig logo” of the famed Bónus grocery chain emblazoned on his t-shirt. In a reversal of roles, photographer Leif agreed to go in front of the camera instead of staying behind it. And what is a social without a silent auction, a raffle, and beer? Keeping with the Icelandic theme, there was Icelandic beer, prizes that included books by Icelandic novelists, brennivín, a handcrafted Icelandic figure, plus the raffle prize of a party keg of beer donated by Icelandic Canadian owned Brazen Hall Kitchen and Brewery. Thanks to Guy Johnson on the Frón board who involved a lot of young people in the organizing and conceptualizing of the event. It was their different “spin” on the social that attracted a wider crowd and brought it to life. Beating the winter blues ... continued from page 1 One hundred years – what a milestone! It has been a busy time for the board of directors and all the committee members of the Icelandic National League of North America. Our focus has largely been on the 100th anniversary celebrations, including creating an anniversary logo, updating brochures, designing new banners to be given to interested member chapters, creating commemorative bookmarks, researching our history, expanding social media messaging, and culminating with a press release across North America and Iceland in April 2019. We hope to create some buzz beyond the Icelandic community. This year we introduced a new award, “Strong is the bond – Römm er sú taug,” which will be given to an individual in recognition of their efforts to strengthen the bonds between Canada, the United States, and Iceland. It will be awarded for the first time at the 100th anniversary convention of the INLNA in Winnipeg, Manitoba, from May 16 to 19, 2019. We continue to work to strengthen our organization by introducing new and revised operating practices, improving communication with our membership, and expanding our social media presence. Check us out on Facebook, Instagram @INLNA, or at our website, www.inlofna.org. We continue to embrace all of our annual programs. The Donald K. Johnson Film Series offers 10 showings across North America of a selected film. This year’s film, about Johann Eyfells, A Force in Nature, is a portrait of a 93-year-old sculptor, a man with a purpose who challenges you to hold yourself up to a similar standard. The INL Reads book choice for this year is On the Cold Coasts by Vilborg Davíðsdóttir, translated by Alda Sigmundsdóttir. The author has participated in creating discussion questions and we are working to schedule an online question-and-answer session at the end of the program. The author will be attending the INLNA convention in Winnipeg. Four Snorri programs were offered this year including the six-week Snorri program, the four-week Snorri West program, the two-week Snorri Plus program, and the one-week Snorri Deaf program, which was a pilot project in 2018. We have chosen Cathy Josephson as our International Visitor this year. She will present on her project covering the methods of transportation used by the Icelanders to get to North America and on to their final destinations once they had arrived. Cathy will be attending the INLNA convention. We are happy to announce that we decided to continue the annual calendar fundraising project. Natalie Guttormsson will be taking the lead with help from Chris Magnusson and in consultation with Dianne O’Konski. The 2020 calendar will be entitled Icelandic 101: Conversation Starter Kit. It will be fun for all ages to try and up their Icelandic language skills. We are working hard on our charitable status application. If successful, there will be much organizational work to do.
