Recent finds even indicate that women
sometimes actively participated in battle;
however, their power resided primarily
on the spiritual and magical sides of life.”
The Vikings Begin originally opened
its American tour at the Mystic Seaport
Museum in Mystic, Connecticut, where
it ran from May 19 to September 30,
2018. (See “Mystic Vikings” by Merrill
Albert in the September 15, 2018,
issue of Lögberg-Heimskringla.) This
collection of artifacts with many finds
that are around 1,400 years old had
never been outside of Scandinavia until
last year.
Gustavianum, Uppsala’s largest
university museum, cares for the
university’s magnificent collections
of archaeological objects, coins, art,
historic scientific instruments, and much
more. The museum’s role has three
main dimensions: the museum building,
Gustavianum, is a place for collaboration
between the university and the rest of
society; their exhibitions and program
of events are inspired by, and reflect,
the university’s collections and research
at Uppsala University; and they ensure
that their collections are accessible for
research and teaching at the university
and other institutes of higher education
– not just in Sweden but also in other
countries.

(L - R) Broaches of stone and glass adorned Viking women’s clothing. A stunningly ornate replica of a Viking helmet showing what it would have looked like
when it was new. As a trading people, it was important for Vikings to be able to weigh things, as this scale attests.
Viking swords with a viewer’s look of awe reflected in the glass case. This staff with an animal head was found
in a woman's grave from the 10th century. Carved from animal bone in may have been the wand of a sorceress
or prophetess. Glasswares were imported by Viking traders. The green glass bowl with gold ornamentation was
imported all the way from Italy.
