VISIT OUR WEBSITE LH-INC.CA 12 • Lögberg-Heimskringla • April 1 2019 Stefan Jonasson Snow avalanches and landslides are a fact of life in Iceland. Over the course of the 20th century, they claimed 193 lives with snow avalanches alone responsible for 166 of the deaths. And that doesn’t include the non-fatal physical injuries, the emotional scars, and the extensive property damage that resulted from these catastrophes. On April 12, 1919, snow avalanches that claimed 18 lives hit Siglufjörður and the neighbouring areas of Engidalur and Héðinsfjörður. The three- story Evanger Herring Plant was completely destroyed and today only a few remnants of its concrete foundation remain to tell the story. This picturesque town, once the centre of the country’s herring fishery, is one of the communities in Iceland that is especially vulnerable to snow avalanches. Three kinds of protective measures are used at Siglufjörður to protect the town and its people as best as humanly possible. At either end of the main settlement, there are deflecting dams that are designed to divert snow away from the town in much the same way as a plough. Above the town itself, there are catching dams that retain snow that cannot be deflected towards the uninhabited areas on either side of the town. Finally, there are steel supporting structures at higher levels that help to stabilize the snow cover in an effort to prevent avalanches from starting in the first place. Together, these three protective measure shield the town from danger. The two deflecting dams, which were built in 1998 and 1999, showed their utility during their first year when they diverted a medium-sized avalanche. The larger of the two is called Stóri-boli (Big Bull) and stands 18 metres high, while the smaller one is called Litli-boli (Little Bull) but still measures an impressive 14 metres. Together they are nearly a kilometre long. The steel stabilizing fences were installed in 2003 and the catching dams were constructed from 2003 to 2008. Since these protective measures were first installed, three avalanches have been diverted around the town and it’s impossible to know how many were prevented altogether by this sophisticated installation. We often talk about collateral damage but, in this case, there are actually collateral benefits. The protective measures have become part of the landscape of the town, creating an outdoor recreation area that includes footpaths along the dams and throughout the area, which provide opportunities for exercise and stunning views of the countryside. By working in harmony with nature, the avalanche defences at Siglufjörður are adding to the beauty and recreational possibilities of the town. VISIT OUR WEBSITE WWW.
