The visit to Manitaba of Iceland’s Prime Minister Geir
Hallgriímsson and his wife Ema Finnsdóttir, as guest of the
Icelandic National League of North America, was the first
historic event of the historic year marking a century of
permanent Icelandic settlerrent in North America. Their
participation as guests of honor in the League’s 56th annual
convention in Winnipeg, launched the centennial celebra-
tions planned for the year, and was greeted with warm
enthusiaism by Canadians of Icelandic origin, many of whom
are third generation descendents of the immigrants of 1875.
Their visit was all too brief, for they crowded a good
deal of travelling into their short stay in Manitoba, went to
some of the communities in historic New Iceland, enjoyed
old time rural hospitality at its best, greeted residents of
the Betel Home at Gimli one by one and chatted with some
of them. And children, many of them four generations re-
moved from the early pioneers, went through their Icelandic
lessons in special classes recently established in the schools
of Arborg and Gimli, then performed in skits in their an-
cestral language. An extra dimension was added by French
Canadian children singing their folk songs and Ukrainian
youngsters in ethnic dances, giving the Prime Minister’s
party a glimpse of Canada’s respect for its multi-cultural
heritage.
Over 60 members of Mrs. Elma Gislason’s Icelandic
Centennial Children’s Choir sang a full program of Icelandic
songs at the annual concert of the League’s Frón Chapter,
then delighted the Prime Minister bv asking for his auto-
graph.
The Prime Minister’s party included Iceland’s ambassa-
dor to Canada and his wife; Mr. and Mrs. Haraldur Kröyer,
and the Prime Minister’s secretary, Biöm Biamason, son of
a former prime minister of Iceland. the late Biami Benedi-
ktsson. He visited Manitoba with his parents in 1964, when
they were guests of honour at the 75th anniversary of
“Islendingadagurinn”.
The party had a busy agenda in Winnipeg, for they
were given the red carpet treatment by the city and pro-
vince, entertained at official functions, shown the city’s
main paints of interest and carefully, if unobtrusively, es-
corted by four R.C.M.P. officers whereever they went.
The Prime Minister told a press conference in Winnipeg
that Canada and Iceland had many vital interests in
oommon. Both countries are members of the North Atlantic
Treaty and both share a maior economic interest in the
establishment of 200-mile coastal territorial limits.
He believes that NATO has proved its worth in the past
25 years as a safeguard against future wars. “NATO should
be strengthened, not in a military sense, but in a moral
sense. In order to maintain peace there must be a show of
strength.....of wffll and combined interests”.
“We loök to Canada in world affairs with great admir-
ation for the example it sets ”
He said that Iceland was still at odds with West
Germany over the 50-mile fishery limits, while settlement
had béen reached with the British, involving a provisional
agreement allowing them to fish in designated areas within
the 50 miles. Despite t’hese restrictions fiehing had declined,
and the limits would be extended to 200 miles within a year.
For Iceland, wihich depends upon fishinig it is a matter of
survival, he said, and he was glad Canada was af the same
opinion regarding territoril lirnits-
While the possibilities of trade with Canada are limited
at present because there are no regular sailings between the
two countries, he said that Iceland could sell Canada indus-
trial and agricultural products, such as prime quality lamb
and wool'len goods.
“We are also developing our geothermal and hydro-
electric power and Canadian industry might be interested
in coming to Iceland for low-price power”.
Prime Minister Geir Hallgrímsson and his party left
Winnip>eg on January 26th, and on the 27th he and ambas-
sador Haraldur Kröyer discussed relations between the two
countries with Canada’s Priime Minister Trudeau in Ottawa.
