I WONDER WHAT
CANADIAN SCHOOLBOOKS
SAY ABOUT LEIFUR EIRIKSSON!
WHEN ICELANDERS arrive in this country from Iceland,
it takes them some time to get used to the mispronounciat-
on of his Christían name. Most pcople call him “Leaf”, somc
call him “Life”. Nobody calls him “Layfur”, which is the
correct Icelandic pronounciation.
Annually, the Danish Can-
adian Club of Calgary holds
a banquet to honour this
famous Son of Iceland. This
year was no exeption. Ap-
proximately 20 members of
the Icelandic Club here at-
tended, as well as people
from the other Nordic
ethnic clubs in Calgary.
It all started out very
well. The smörgasbord was
delicious. Everybody talked
about the redecorations in
the club. Then came the
introductions of the honour-
ary guests. Everybody was
introduced, — except for Mr.
Aleck Thorarinsson, the Ice-
landic Consul, who had trav-
elled all the way from Win-
nipeg to be at the banquet!
The story went that the
Master of Ceremonies could-
n’t introduce our Consul be-
cause the present Mayor of
Calgary, the infamous Mr.
Rod Sykes, just couldn’t re-
sist making a political
speach, hence the banquet to
honour the great Icelandic
discoverer of America, turn-
ed into a political circus.
But that wasn’t enough.

tinuously added insult to
injury by calling Leifur Ei-
riksson, a Norwegian. And
the Christian name af anoth-
er viking who sailed to
America, Bjarni Herjólfsson
became “Barney”. Why not
just call him Colonel Sand-
ers?
Year after year, lceland-
ers have to listen to speech-
es about Leifur Eiriksson,
portraying total ignorance,
with a lot of distortions of
the facts. Is it too much to
ask from the organizers of
the banquet that they choose
speakers who know their
history — (or rather our
history?) — I don’t think it
is.
It’s about time non-Iceland-
ic Canadians realized that
Leifur Eiriksson was not a
Norwegian, but a born Ice-
lander, just as Icelanders
are not Scandinavians, but
Nordic people!
We as Icelanders should
strive towards making the
facts crystal clear wherever
and whenever we can.
