LuGBERG-HEIMSKRINGLA, FOSTUDAGUR 27. JANUAR 1978
VANCOUVER (CP) - Some people
pick up starving, abandoned animals
aiid make homes for them.
Peter Sigmundson found an aban-
dones, neglected 1961 MGA roadster a
few weeks ago on a city street, fed it
some clean oil, and had it purring in a
warm garage.
It was all done with the blessing of
the provincial Motor Vehicles Branch
(MVB), and the process cost him $1.37.
The car he figures will be worth $2,000
when it’s ■áll fixed up, is all his, Sig-
mund thought, until a monkey wrench
was’thrown in the works last week.
/íi
Slgmundson, a Vancouver advertis-
ing tiisfributor, said that in early Sep^
tember, he saw the car parked for sev-
eral weeks with its convertible top
open. The rains came, and he closed its
top, and began wondering about the
sleek two-seater.
He called an office of the Motor Ve-
hicles Branch, which said he might get
the car under a section of thé highways
(scenic impovement) act which allows
either city or provincial officials to dis-
pose of abandoned cars.
The branch gave him instruction
which he followed to the letter. He
paid 25 cents for a vehicle search, then
sent a double-registered letter ($1.12)
to the registered owner who apparent-
ly was in Toronto and the letter was
returned marked undeliverable.
Sigmundson brought the unopened
letter to the MVB, and to his astonish-
ment, the branch said the car was
his.
. “That day they signed the car over
to me, and I got a Ucence and insur-
ance,” he said. “I started working on it
and put about $400 worth of work into
it.”
Then came the bad news.
A senior employee of the branch
sent Sigmundson a note saying he was
driving a stolen car.
Sigmundson met with the MVB of-
fice manager and a city police detec-
tive who “told me he wasn’t exactly
sure if the MVB had the right to assign
the car.”
He was informed by the police that
city lawyers believe the car is not his.
Regarding abandoned cars, the
highways (scenic improvement) act
says the province, or a municipality,
“may cause the vehicle to be disposed
of” and that neither the person or
agency that disposes of the car, “nor
the person who receives the vehicle on
a disposition under this section” (Sig-
mundson) is liable to the previous
owner.
The legislation says that the prov-
ince can dispose of cars outside a mu-
nicipality, and the city can dispose of
cars within its jurisdiction.
Sigmundson’s problem: what hap-
pens When the provincial MVB dis-
poses of a car that should be disposed
of by the city? N
While the legal experts argue, Sig-
mundson says he’d “like to phone up
the original owner and find out how he
feels about it, but I don’t like the idea
of buying a car I already own.”
Sigmundson has about $300 worth
of additional parts on order for his
stray MGA, and plans to tour Oregon
when it’s ready to go.
Meanwhile, it’s not all that certain
the original owner may want to claim
the car. Maximum penalty for aban-
doning a car under the act is $500.
Cheap car deal
backfires
$1.37 bought Peter Sigmundson this 1961 MG and a barrel of legal trouble.

HOUSE OF ICELAND
Framh. al bls. 1

varla hitt íslendinga í ára-
tugi.”
Nú er eitt ár liðið frá því
Islendingafélagið var stofn-
áð, The House of Iceland, er
það kallað. Á stofnfundinum
voru 26 manns, en áður var
búið að ákveða, að til þess
að stofna félagið skyldu að
minnsta kosti tuttugu og
fimm manns koma til stofn-
fundarins. Annars væri til-
gangslaust að stofna félag.
Nú eru rösklega 70 manns
i félaginu, — 25 þeirra eru
fæddir á Islandi, aðrir 25
eru Vestur-lslendingar og
svo eru margir Bandaríkja-
menn ,sem á einhvern hátt
hafa fengið áhuga á íslandi,
og sumir þeirra gegndu her-
þjónustu á Islandi á stríðs-
árunum.
Þess má geta, að eitt fyrsta
verkefni stjórnarinnar eftir
stofnfundinn, var að efna til
skemmtikvölds fyrir félags-
menn, og voru þá framreidd
ar íslenskar kökur og annað
góðgæti. Kleinurnar reynd-
ust vinsælastar, og seldust
þær upp á klukkustund, og
hefði sjálfsagt verið hægt að
selja kleinur þarna í hundr-
aðatali. — Þetta fyrsta
skemmtikvöld félagsins
sóttu um hundrað manns. —
Við höfðum samband við
John Long fyrir skömmu til
þess að fregna nánar af
“House of Iceland”, og hann
skrifaði okkur bréf, sem birt
er á baksíðu blaðsins í dag.
