pipes were to be seen.
However, in the townsite hot
water underground pipes
had been almost completely
installed to bring lava heat
into every home.
While these visits to
not allow sufficient time to
seek out technical in-
formation on the town
heating project, the general
principles employed were
obtained through con-
versation with relatives.
The method employed is to
dig a hole on the slopes of
ELDFELL about 20 feet deep.
In the bottom of this ex-
cavation a series of pipes
are laid and covered. Before

is in place, a polyethylene
sheet is laid and then the
final 18 inches filled with
volcanic ash.
Water is circulated
through the buried pipes,
which pick up the volcanic
heat, as the warm water
circulates through the
homes, the heat is released
by radiators to bring
warmth to the houses on
HEIMAEY. The plastic
tarpaulin prevents the rain
moisture from peeping down
into the ashes and draining
heat away from the buried
unit below, 'which is busily
collecting heat out of the.
earthly embers. The vent
pipes, that presently adorn
the slopes of ELDFELL,
allow pressure to escape
that could disrupt the un-
derground installations.
Apparently one of the
early problems, that has
been overcome, was to find
a suitable metal for the
buried heat extracting units,
that would resist the
corrosive action of the
volcanic ash.
Built into this system are
the numerable pumping
distribution and control
mechanisms that make the
process possible, which in
itself is a story of great
engineering significance. It
is an application which
turned disaster into a useful
economic asset. No longer
do the people of HEIMAEY
have to rely on expensive
foreign fuel oil, an uncertain
source of heat energy.
A visit to HEIMAEY is
rewarding. The marine
museum has an excellent
display of live fish that are
native to Icelandic waters.
A modern museum, housed
in a new building has an
extensive display of ar-
tifacts that reveal the life
over the centuries by a
people traditionally bound
close to the sea.
Outdoor walls of buildings
have been set aside, on
which school children have
painted massive pieces of
art works that richly display
the great cultural heritage
of the Icelandic race. The
people are friendly and
hospitality genuine.
On your trip to Iceland
make HEIMAEY a place to
visit and experience,
‘‘LAVA HEAT”.
