Wants to visit
North America
Eleanor Wachtel presents $1,000 cheque to Bill on behalf
of “Books in Canada”.
Valgardson
honoured
The following letter has been
received by L.H.
"I am a student 19 years of age. I
wish to visit North America for a
few months' stay to get to know its
people and improve my command
of English. Although I am par-
ticularly interested in working on a
farm, I will take any such job that
may be available. Perhaps, someone
would be prepared to put me up in
his home during the period in ques-
tion. I neither smoke nor drink.
Those interested in my request are
asked to write either to Lögberg-
Heimskringla or to myself directly.
With sincere thanks,
Jóhann Gunnar Sævarsson

Recently W.D. Valgardson receiv-
ed the fifth annual Books in Canada
Award for Novels published in
Canada (see L.H., April 10). These
two pictures were taken by Bob
Asgeirsson on that occasion.
A cocktail party was given to
allow for the presentation of the
$1,000 cheque. Most of those
who attended were fellow
authors and peopie in the
publishing industry. The photo
shows Bill in the Cocktail setting
listening to a colleague's frustra-
tions or joys.
To your eighty birthdays
Are added eight years more,
And with the passing ages
You grow better than before!
You're a loving, cheerful mother
You're a blessed mate to me.
Your noble, loving kindness '
Will, I know, rewarded be.
Your lifelong, gracious giving
Is a parable of love.
May the years ahead be gladsome
Blessed by the Lord above.

Bjössi sonur minn og Sigga dóttir mín eru hjá góðum kennara. Synir mínir
og dætur mínar hafa alltaf haft góða kennara. í gamla daga voru fáir kenn-
arar hér í borg, og þá varð ég að lesa í bókunum mínum í staðinn fyrir að
leita til kennara. Hjá góðum kennurum er gott að læra. Þetta er mitt borð.
Hver situr á mínum stól? Ég ætla að fara upp í herbergið mitt og sækja
bókina mína.
