Report from the Icelandic
Canadian Club of Toronto
Our annual meeting was held on
april 20, 1982 with the election of a
new slate of officers. The incoming
President is Stefan Gudmundsson,
who came here from Iceland about
ten years ago. The remainder of the
The Half and
the Whole
by Gus Sigurdson
THE HALF
Half in sadness
Half in fear
Let us see
What we have here,
Half in shadow
Half in light
Hidden from
Our human sight.
Half accomplished
Half untried
Half but grown
When it lied —
Half unfinished
When it died.
THE WHOLE
Fully blown
Like a rose
Blooming in the sun.
It chose
Blending with
The light of truth
Like bud in blossom
In its youth —
Flashing beauty
Out and in
Flaming from
A fire within
Bound to conquer
And to win.

Frygðugur, 'ann bætti í bú

Ellin færðist ofur hratt
yfir br-úði fríða,
undan henni víf sér vatt,
vildi engu hlýða.
Hún var ekki laus við lost
er lá 'ún undir svelgnum
svo Magga litla kaus þann kost
að kasta ellibelgnum.
Með hugprýðini honum tókst
að hylja sára skelli
og stjórnarandinn jafnvel jókst,
hann Jóa lagði að velli.
Þau hamast nú af huga og sál,
halda strikum beinum,
hann, að ræða heimsins mál,
hun, að velta steinum.

by Gus Sigurdson
Let us unite from coast to coast
In everything that means the most
To our Canadian Nation.
From north to south,
from east to west
The biggest bravest land and best
In all of God's creation —
Our Canada beyond compare
Is always strong and always fair.
Let no one whine or whimper here
Decline to separation.
With God above us in command
He guides us with His Mighty hand
From ocean on to ocean’s strand
—One brave Canadian Nation.

Thorrablot, held on February 20th.
Approximately 120 people were in
attendance to enjoy a sumptious
buffet, including the Icelandic
specialties, hangikjot, ponnukokur
and vinarterta, to mention a few.
Then there was dancing and
socializing. Among those attending
were Icelanders from Montreal and
Rochester, New York, as well as
Icelandic students attending univer-
sities here in Ontario.
Our October meeting attracted a
good attendance due to a program
on Icelandic immigration into
Canada, presented by Joe Martin,
whose Mother was Icelandic and
who grew up in Saskatchewan. Joe
is a Management Consultant in
Toronto, and has always been in-
terested in his Ipelandic heritage
and made quite a study of it.
The final event of the season will
be our picnic to be held as close to
June 17th as possible.

Munnleg geymsla
handritanna

Salmon fishing in the unpolluted and clean rivers of Iceland is among the most popular activities with
visitors. Rivers are stocked and the catches controlled with the result that salmon fishing has doubled in
the last decade.
