Copies of "Icelandic Settlers in America" were recently presented to seven Evergreen division schools by members of Icelandic National League in Gimli, Oli Narfason, Marg Cronshaw and Gwen Geir- holm. Division superintendent A1 Oleson and secretary-treasurer Don Bjornson accepted the books on behalf of the schools. The book, written in easy reading style for children ages nine and up, explores stories of the migration of the Icelanders from their beloved island home to North America, a story of adversity and hardship overcome by courage and tenacity. The Gimli group sponsored the book written by Elva Simundsson and illustrated by Arborg teacher Nelson Gerrard. In presenting copies to the divi- sion, Oli Narfason said a lot of work went into preparing the stories and he was pleased that the students would be able to make use of them. He said it was an excellent way for students to learn about the Icelandic people. AI Oleson agreed. "Because they're in short story style they’re Continued from page 1 proof that Icelanders had become as volatile in their voting behaviour as citizens of any modern society. The vote shifts in Reykjavík now: Independence Party up to 52.5% from 47.4% in 1978; the Pro- gressives up to 9.5% from 9.4%; the Social Democrats down to 8% from 13.4%; and the People's Alliance down to 19% from 29.8%. In the book, the Icelanders are described as lovers of adventure in- herited from their Viking fore- fathers; their independence tempered by a respect for learning the rule of law made the Icelanders some of North America's finest citizens. Besides the copies for Riverton, Arborg, Gimli and Winnipeg Beach schools Marg Cronshaw said volumes were also presented to Hastings School and Minnitonka schools in Winnipeg. The theme of the book follows along the basic purpose of the Icelandic National League itself says Oli Narfason.
