WINNIPEG, FÖSTUDAGUR 24. SEPTEMBER 1982-3
Markervillehátíðin
Hátt á ahnað þúsund manns voru
viðstaddir hátíðahöld við hús
Stephans G. Stephanssonar 7. ágúst
síðastliðinn. Sumir voru langt að
komnir, t.d. eitthundrað og fimmtíu
bændur af íslandi. Þá skipulagði
Viking Travel á Gimli ferð vestur og
nutu hennar fjölmargir frá Gimli,
Arborg, Selkirk og Winnipeg.
í allstóru rjóðri, framan við hús
meistara Stephans,_ komu heiðurs-
gestir sér makindalega fyrir á upp-
hækkuðum palli en aðrir gestir
dreifðu sér um flötina. Veður var
hið besta, heiðskírst og nærri 30
stiga hiti.
Frú Mary LeMessurier,
menningarmálaráðherra Alberta
setti hátíðina með nokkrum orðum
en gaf síðan séra Emil Guðmunds-
syni frá Minnesota orðið. Séra Emil
er Vestur íslendingum vel kunnur,
bæði fyrir prestskap og fræðistörf.
Flutti hann stutta bæn og minntist
skáldsins í nokkrum orðum.
G.A. Arnason, ræðismaður
íslands í Alberta og formaður nefnd-
ar þeirrar sem skipulagðu endur-
reisn, hússins, lýsti störfum nefnd-
arinnar og sögu staðarins. Að
lokinni ræðu hans tók Rósa
Benediktson, dóttir Stephans, til
máls. Mælti hún fyrst á íslensku en
svo á ensku. Rósa minntist móður
sinnar, Hegu, og gat þess að án henn-
ar hefði minna orðið til af ljóðum
Stephans. "Það var algengt, sagði
Rósa, að faðir minn hvarf sjónum
snemma að kveldi og lokaði sig inni
við skrifborð sitt. Móðir mín kom
okkur börnunum í rúmið, lagði sig
svo stundarkorn, en reis svo aftur
úr rekkju um miðnættið. Lagaði hún
þá kaffi og færði föður mínum. Sat
hann svo iðulega við skriftir langt
fram á nótt”.
Aðrir ræðumenn voru Ingvar
Gíslason, menntamálaráðherra
fslands og hefur ræða hans þegar

At Close of Day
(1883)
When sunny hills are draped in velvet shadows by summer night
And Lady Moon hangs out among the tree tops her crescent bright;
And when the welcome evening breeze is cooling my fevered brow
And all who toil rejoice that blessed night time approaches now —
When out among the herds the bells are tinkling now clear, now faint,
As in the woods a lonely bird is voicing his evening plaint;
The wandering breeze with drowsy accent whispers its melody,
And from the brook the joyous cries of children are borne to me;
When fields of grain have caught a gleam of moonlight but bark the ground—
A pearl-grey mist has filled to over-flowing the dells around;
Some golden stars are peeping forth to brighten the eastern wood —
Then I am resting out upon my doorstep in nature's mood.
My heart reflects the rest and sweet rejoicing around, above;
Where beauty is the universal language and peace and love.
Where all things seem to join in benediction and prayers for me;
Where at night's loving heart both earth and heaven at rest I see.
And.when the last of all my days is over, the last page turned —
And, whatsoever shall be deemed in wages that I have earned,
In such a mood I hope to be composing my sweetest lay —
And then extend my hand to all the world and pass away.
