Hans Robert Tergesen andaðisl í
Winnipeg 13. janúar síðastliðinn.
Robert, eins og hartn var venjulega
kallaður, átti og rak lyfjaverzlun á
Gimli í 44 ár. Árið 1956 gekk soliur
hans, Robert í lið með honum og
gerðist meðeigandi. Rekur hann nú
verzlunina.
Hans Robert leysti úr vanda fjölda
manns f gegnum tíðina á sinn hæga
en örugga hátt. Naut hann virðingar
og elsku, ekki aðeins fjölskyld-
unnar heldur einnig allra er hattrt
umgekkst.
Robert var mikili áhugamanður um
íþróttir og tók virkan þátt á yngri
árum. Hann lék hokki og hornabolta
af miklunl áhugti alla tíð. Hans
tilheyrð Lúthersku kifkjunni á Gimli
Mr. R. Tcrgcscn
en sem drengur kynnti hann að
jafnaði ofn kirkjunnar og sá um að
vel logaði þegar þess þurfti. Hann
studdi ávallt góðan málstað af örlæti
og með heilum luig.
Hans ósk var að að honum látrtUfn
yrðu augu hans gefinn "augnbanka"
lfkið brennt og að útför yrði látlaus.
Hann syrgja nú kona hans, Guðbjörg
Ruby, sonurinn Robert, dætur tvær
Janis Perras og Becky; tengdasonur
Gerry og þrjú barna börn, Nicole,
Jeffery og Tristen; einnig systurnar
Anna Jonasson og Alma og loks einn
bróðir Jóhann, kona hans Laura auk
yngra frændfólks.
Fjölskyldan þakkar Dr. Ewart og
starfsliði sjúkrahússins svo og fyrrum
samstarfsmanni, Clem Wintrup. (þýtt

Three truckloads of American
soldiers sweep onto the barren
coastal sands of southern iceland,
under the watchful eye of a yoting
radical farmer and of the local iight-
house keeper, a yottng woman who
opposes the US íiiiiitary presence in
the country. The soldiers claim to be
simpiy on holiday, but the locals do
not know what to believe — many
think that some military operation
must be on the cards, while some are
far from hostiie to tlie idea of a little
niiiitary outpost, and the chance to
make a fast buck.
The situation is described in the
opening scenes of Ágúst Gudmund-
sson's latest filrrt Gullsandur (Golden
Sand), premiered in Reykjavík at
Christmas to an enthusiastic recep-
tion. The farmer and the lighthouse
keeper decide, as no one seems in the'
least interested in the "military ac-
tivities," to draw public attention to
what is going on. They are so
successful that the Icelandic media
fall over each other in the attempt to
relay the latest news from the sands.
As the true explanation of the
soldiers' presence gradually emerges,
it is clear tliat the majority of those
involved understand only the profit
motive, regardless of questions of
war or peace.
Gudmundsson's films are general-
ly thought-provoking but with a
generotis helping of hlimöUr —
Goldeh Simd is thoroughly enjoyable
entertainment, but errs perhaps on
the side of lightness, so the audienee
need not contemplate the important
questions touched upon in the film.
The director (and scriptwriter) clear-
ly intends the audience to weigh up
the arguments on both sicles.
Although the fiim can be interpreted
as showing opposition to military in-
lervention and to greed for money,
this is no work of propaganda. Each
member of the aUdience inust make.

The colÍábOratlott of director Gud-
mundsson and cameraman Sigurdur
Sverrir Pálsson produces a visually
stunning fiittt, set in the sands attd
marshes vvhich provide an in-
teresting background for the film's
unexpected evenls and comic in-
terludes. The leading roles are played
by Pálrtii Gestsson and Edda
Björgvinsdóttir, both well-known for
comedy roles, who have the chance
in Golden Simd to demonstrate the
range of their talents.
The message of Golden Sand is a
truism about corruption of ideals and
the immorality of opportunism, or
alternatively illustratés the practical
advantages of expediency. It all
depends on your point of view.
