Lögberg-Heimskringla - 08.03.1985, Síða 3
WINNIPEG, FOSTUDAGUR 8. MARZ 1985-3
President speaks
Eric Stephanson of
Elfros, Saskatchewan
One of the newest chapters of the
Icelandic National League is the Vat-
nabyggð Chapter in Saskatchewan.
Vatnabyggð was for a long time one
of the largest Icelandic settlements
outside Manitoba and still is very
Icelandic. It does not seem so long
ago since Vatnabyggð was constant-
ly mentioned in both Lögberg- and
Heimskringla but for a while a con-
tact was lost, but that has obviously
changed today.
Mr. Eric Stephanson is the presi-
dent of the Vatnabyggð Chapter and
a fine one. He has, with the help of
his co-workers built a strong Chapter
that is increasing in size all the time.
Mr. Stephanson was kind enough to
tell us a little bit about his Chapter
and its immediate plans.
"Our Þorrablót will be on the
Saturday, March 23. Entertainment
will be similar to that of last year. We
have hopes to host Mr. Magnús
Magnússon during his travels
through Canada in the summer. He
will be here as guest of the National
League in June and will travel west
to B.C. Then we have thought of an
event either outdoors or indoors or a
combination of both, possibly around
June 17 but that is just on the
drawing board so I cannot say much
more about that now. Our member-
ship is growing steadily and it seems
that not only those living in the im-
Mr. Eric Stephanson
mediate area are interested but also
many ex-residents who have moved
to other provinces. For example, we
have members in Alberta and On-
tario. Finally I should mention plans
for our lottery. Mrs. Marjorie Ar-
nason was in touch with us not so
long ago and told us about the ticket
we are supposed to raffle off. The
prize is a trip to Iceland and we are
very excited about that."
Here are a few photographs taken
at Lögberg-Heimskringla meeting in
Wynyard last fall but the Vatnabyggð
Chapter hosted the directors.
