The Ballad of Debbie and Rick
I Icelandic Content
Rick drove one night through city
park,
His Honda thrummed a tune;
The dial-glass, the tank, the pipes
Highlighted by the moon.
He stopped beneath a gloomy oak
To watch a sinking star
And something soft and human
spoke
In the shaddow of a car.
Deb's voice was like the wind on
grass
Or breezes borne from sea;
Filling his heart with strange delight,
And luring mystery.^
"Come where the river winds," Deb
said
"Come where the water spills.
I know the way to mountain-tops
And poppy-sprinkled hills."
They rode for dreamy weeks and
hours,
And lay in grasses deep;
And every night with thumping heart
He kissed her eyes to sleep.
"I love you true, so true,” Deb said
"I love you evermore.
I love you, Rick; I love you, Rick!"
And kissed him score on score.
One night when ever star was dead,
They rode on Highway 3;
And met a gang of thirteen bikes,
A black-clad company.
"Fight or you die!" the pack decreed
The black-clad troops stood by;
Prince whirled and flicked his
slender knife,
And cut Rick in the eye.
Then Rick in anger thrust his blade,
And sliced the midnight air;
And all the pack moved knifing in,
And left him bleeding there.
Then Ricky lay in his own blood,
Stabbed to eternal death;
While Debbie watched with open
eyes,
And heard his dying breath.
She did not kneel nor hold his head
But took Prince by the hand:
"I love you, love you true," she said
"Oh take me with your band."
Prince cast her to his waiting pack;
And each one used her ill;
They loved her in the muddy ditch
And left her cold and still.
The thirteen black-coats roared away
To stale and empty rooms.
Now from the clay-commingled
blood
A tender rosebush blooms.

Editorial: The most important Ice-
landic Celebration on this Continent
is only a few weeks away. This cele-
bration soon will celebrate its lOOth
anniversary in Canada but in 1890
the first Icelandic Celebration was
organized in Winnipeg. When one
looks back and studies the programs
through the years, one cannot help
but notice the thousands of people
who have in one way or another con-
tributed. The variety has always been
there but much emphasis has always
been put on music and poetry. This
has not changed much as is born out
in an article on page four. It is good
to see that an Icelandic male choir
will take part this year; it increases
the value of the Festival and strength-
ens the ties between Iceland and Ice-
landers in North America. Another
entertainer, Eiríkur Arni, is also from
Iceland. He has studied music in the
U.S. for some time and will attend
the School of Music at the University
of Manitoba in the coming academic
year. Eiríkur is an artist who com-
poses and also paints. Icelandic or-
ganizations in Canada should pay at-
tention to him — he might be willing
to perform on differeent occasions
this coming winter. Kristjana Gun-
nars and David Arnason, our excel-
lent writers, should always be in-
cluded in the program; they write
well and recite with class. It is also
very interesting to see names of rel-
atively new entertainers of Icelandic
background. For example Diedrie
and Linda Collette, Lee Brandson and
Tristen Tergesen.
Storm hits Iceland
Icelanders were reminded of
where they live last weekend when
snowstorm covered the north and
east. The Pressident, Vigdís Finnbog-
adóttir, was touring the east and had
to postpone several appearances due
to snow. Temperatures in Akureyri
went as low as 3 degrees bur in
Reykjavík northerly winds made life
miserable for the inhabitants of the
Capital. Many an event had to be
cancelled and a Viking celebration at
Thingvellir had to be cut short as
tents were blown down by these
strong, freezing cold winds.

Family Reunion
in Iceland
And Prince the leader of the pack,
Deep-chested, bearded red,
Approached them on his metal steed,
And then unsmiling, said:
"I'll take the broad to treat my boys
And you can take the road."
But Rick embraced his love and
glared,
While Debbie passed a nod.
The dark clouds gathered in the
night,
The pack closed in and 'round;
Their iron boot-heels scarred the
stones,
And made a rasping sound.
"This is my love." Rick trembling
said,
"Tough nuts!" came the reply.
A flash of lightning lit the land,
And thunder split the sky.
"Now here's the deal," the Prince
declared
And gave Rick chain and blade,
"We'll fight for Debbie one to one
Not either asking aid."
"I live by law, by gentleness,
And violence I abhor;
So let us pass and go our way
We'll bother you no rnore."
But Debbie's eyes were glowing
bright,
Her cheeks were flushed and hot;
And silently she watched the pack,
Her body pent and taut.
