rising above a comfortable 21° C,

ly dips below 0° C.
Seattle was first settled in 1851. It
was named after Chief Sealth, an In-
dian chief and leader of the Duwam-
ish Indian Nation. The Duwamish In-
dians befriended the first settlers in
the area. It is said that Chief Sealth
was unhappy that the growing village
was named for him because he be-
lieved that after death his spirit
would be troubled every time his
name was spoken. As he grew older
he often asked for gifts from Seattle
citizens to compensate him in ad-
vance for the troubles he would en-
Counter in his after-life.
In 1887 Indridi Indridason, the first
settler from Iceland, arrived in Seat-
tle. Today Seattle boasts a population
of western Icelanders in excess of
5,000.
Seattle is the home of the Boeing
Airplane Company which employs
63,000 people.
It has been three and one-half yeajs
since Iceland's President Vigdis FinJv
bogadottir visited Seattle. She arrived
in Seattle after having travelled to
several American cities where she
visited with many Icelandic people
while promoting Scandinavia Today.
She was overwhelmed by her recep-
tion in Seattle and personally met
with some 700 western Icelanders
and Icelandic citizens who reside in
the Seattle area.
During the year following Presi-
dent Vigdis' successful visit to Seat-
tle, Jon Marvin Jonsson, Consul for
Iceland in Seattle, appointed a com-
mittee composed of several promi-
nent Seattlites to promote and in-
vestigate the Seattle/Reykjavík
connection.
Mayor David Oddsson of Reyk-
javík visited Seattle in the fall of
1983. He met with Seattle's Mayor
Royer and Jon Marvin Jonsson to dis-
cuss the Reykjavík/Seattle Sister City
proposal.
"By the establishment of the sister
city relationship we hope to exchange
knowledge and enhance the com-
munication and understanding be-
tween the cultures”, says Jon Marvin

Jonsson. "Both cities have shown an
active interest in educational, cul-
tural, technical, economic and
govemmental exchanges that teach
the public of the cultural and political
diversity of the world", he stated. Jon
added, "Other Seattle sister-city rela-
tionships have led to exchange pro-
grams involving students, teachers
and tourists."
