In impressive victory. Winnipeg Eric Stefanson won his seat In rural Manitoba, Ted Arnason re- Walter and Joan Swainson at their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Golden Wedding Anniversary It was Sunday afternoon the 21st of September, a bright warm day, when family and friends gathered at 23 Voyageur Avenue, Winnipeg, to pay their respects to Joan and Walter Swainson on the occasion of the 50th Wedding Anniversary. Joan was born and attended school at Baldur, Manitoba. Walter was born in the Arborg, Manitoba area and as a youngster moved with his family to Baldur. Their son, Ralph, and his wife welcomed the guests into their home. Their daughter, Carol, is married to Dennis Lisoway. Joan and Walter are proud of their five grandchildren and one great grandchild. Their relatives came from Baldur, Stonewall, Brandon, Gimli, and Win- nipeg — many of whom were nieces and nephews; included were numer- ous friends from Winnipeg. Eighty Six less 50 equals 36, which means Joan and Walter were married in 1936, one of the bottom years of the Great Depression. This did not phase them as they decided to get married and confront the difficulties of that era. Doing the sensible thing they head- ed north where Walter found employment in the mining town of Sherridon with the Sherrit-Gordon Mines, the only type of active in- dustry during the depression. Later they moved to Winnipeg where Walter found employment with the T. Eaton Co. until his retirement. They presently reside in their Queen St. home where they have lived for many years. In life they have achieved the ultimate goal as successful parents who enjoy the respect of their children, grandchildren and relatives. They have the true friendship of friends. Their achievement is that of highly respected honourable citizens, and what more can life offer, unless it is fame and fortune, both of which are elusive and not necessarily factors to a better life. It was pleasant to be guests at this gathering of relatives and friends. We wish Joan and Walter many happy years during the twilight of life. — Einar Arnason mains Mayor at Gimli while Victor Sigurdson rules in Riverton; Larus Palson in Arborg, and Fred Sigurdson in Swan River. On town and village councils one finds Jack Thorkelson in Gimli, Leslie Magnuson in Steinbach, Arni Anderson and Hermann Palsson in Arborg, Colin Bjarnason, Beatrice Olafson and Thor Stevens in River- ton and Lyle Eyjolfson in Teulon. In rural municipal and local gov- ernment district councils the fol- lowing Icelanders serve as Reeve: David Gislason in Bifrost, Ray Sigurdson in Gimli, Dori Bjarnason in Westbourne, and Bjarni Sigurdson in Alonsa. There are also numerous Icelanders on the rural municipal and local government district councils but these were not available. The same can be said for rural and Winnipeg school divisions. From left to right: Magnus Eliason, Winnipeg City Councillor, Mr. Davíð Oddsson, Mayor of Reykjavík, Iceland and Eric Stefansson, Winnipeg City Councillor. Magnus and Eric visited Reykjavík in August, representing Winnipeg during the Reykjavík Bicentennial celebration. Mr. Oddsson has been invited by the Winnipeg Mayor, Mr. William Norrie, to attend the Lögberg-Heimskringla celebration - next month.
