Installation held
Glenn and Rita Peterson and Frank
Josephson were among the many
who attended the installation of
Stefan Guttormsson to Bishop of the
Southwestern Wisconsin Synod of
the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America on November 8 at La
Crosse, Wisconsin.
Bishop Guttormsson was installed
by the Rev. David Preuss, presiding
bishop of the American Lutheran
Church, one of three bodies uniting
to form the new Lutheran church.
Stefan T. Guttormsson was born in
Minneota, Minnesota on June 12,
1925, the son of Gutormur and Rann-
veig (Egilson) Gutormsson. Rev. Gut-
tormur Gutormsson was for many
years the Pastor of St. Paul's Luthe-
ran Church in Minneota and was
born in Krossavik, Vopnafjord,
Iceland. Stafan's mother, Rannveig,
was born in Hallson, N.D. and was
a granddaughter of Johann Hallson,
founder of the Icelandic Lutheran
Church in Hallson, N.D.
In World War II, Stefan served in
the U.S. Navy aboard the submarine,
the U.S.S. Seal. He graduated from St.
Olaf Lutheran College, Northfield, in
194-9 with a Bachelor of Arts degree
(majors in philosophy and music,
minor in psychology). He prepared
for the ministry at Northwestern
Lutheran Theological Seminary in
Minneapolis, graduating with a
Master of Divinity Degree in May of
1952, and was ordained to the Luthe-
ran ministry by the Icelandic Luthe-
rari Synod of the United Lutheran
Church at Minneota on June 29,
1952.
He served as pastor of the United
Lutheran Church of Cavalier, N.D.,
and Immanuel Lutheran Church in
Bathgate, N.D. from 1952-57; St.
Luke's Lutheran Church in
Bloomington from 1957-61; and be-
gan his ministry as Senior Pastor at
the English Lutheran Church in La
Crosse, Wisconsin on September 1,
1961. He took a quarter of Clinical
Pastoral Education at Mendota State
Hospital, Madison, Wisconsin in
1970.
He and his wife, Mary (Jories),
were married March 10, 1945. The
Guttormssons have six children,
Stefan, Mary, Susan, Elizabeth,
Christopher and Paul. They have
seven grandchildren.
Pastor Guttormsson is now Presi-
dent of the Board of Directors of La
Crosse Lutheran Hospital Founda-
tion, Vice Presiden tof the Viterbo
College Advisory Board, and a mem-
ber of many other organizations in
the La Crosse area. In addition, he is
Chairman of the Pastoral Care Com-
mittee of Hillview, a County Nursing
Home, conducts services regularly at
Hillview under the sponsorship of
the La Crosse Ministerial Assn., and
serves as pastoral advisor for the Hill-
view Hospice Program.
Rev. Guttormsson has served as
Senior Pastor of the English Lutheran
Church in La Crosse for the past 26
years. During that time he has been
honored with many fine awards for
his service to the community.
The newly formed La Crosse area
synod represents 78 congregations
and 81 worship centers in western
Wisconsin and southeast Minnesota.
The synod is one of 65 geographical
units in the new church. The func-
tion of the office is to assist the work
of local congregations and organiza-
tions in the new church.

Events in 1904
Kristinn K. Olafsson graduated
from the Lutheran Theological
School in Chicago, during April
1904. In June he was ordained at
the First Lutheran Church in Win-
nipeg by the President of the
Church Association Rev. Jon Bjar-
nason. Rev. Kristinn Olafsson was
the son of Kristinn Oláfsson farm-
er at Gardar N.D. from Eyjafjord,
Iceland.
In Winnipeg Stefan Guttormsson
graduated from the Arts Faculty
with honours and a silver medal in
mathematics. He was the son of
Guttormur Thorsteinsson in the Vi-
daness district of New Iceland, who
came from Krossavik, in Vopnfjord
Iceland.
At the same exams Hannes Mari-
no Hannesson passed his second
law exams with high recognition.
On June 27, 1904 the new and
magnificent church of the First
Lutheran congregation in Winnipeg
was ordained by the president and
ministers of the Evangelical Luthe-
ran Church of Icelanders in the
Western Hemisphere, who were
holding their 20th annual
convention.
During the month of July 1904,
Gisli J. Gislason graduated from the
Illinois Medical College with high
marks. Dr. Gislason was the son of
Jon Gislason who farmed many
years at Flatatunga, Skagafjord.
At the end of June Halldor B. Gis-
lason graduated in law from the
University of Minnesota. He was
mentioned in the 1904 edition of the
Almanak in connection with teach-
ing at this same univesity.
From the university in Grand
Forks, Gunnar Olgeirsson graduat-
ed in law.
T. Kristjansson graduated from
the Agricultural College at Fargo,
N.D. He was the son of Trausti
Kristjansson farmer at Gardar, N.D.
During Nov. 1904 Josef Sigvalda-
son Walter farmer at Gardar was
elected to the lower division of the
state legislature in N.D.
