Icelandic exercise
milking skjalda
Little Sigga was in the country dur-
ing summer. Many cows were at the
farm. The prettiest and best behaved
cow was Skjalda. The children al-
ways quarreled about who would milk
Skjalda. In the end it was decided
that four would milk her two and two
at a time. Skjalda usually behaved
and remained quiet, even though
much commotion was created by the
children. But on one occasion things
were different. Sigga was milking her
into a big pail, when Skjalda began
to kick continuously until she was
back on the stable floor in her hob-
bles. Sigga was scared and rushed
hastily into the house to call for help.
After this Sigga never dared to milk
Skjalda again during the summer. But
the small milk maid was only ten
years of age.
SKJALDA MJÓLKUÐ
Sigga litla var í sveit á sumrin. Mar-
gar kýr voru á bænum. Fallegasta og
þægasta kýrin hét Skjalda. Krakkar-
nir rifust alltaf um að mjólka Skjöl-
du. Endirinn varð sá að fjögur
mjólkuðu hana, tvö og tvö í senn.
Skjalda var oftast þæg og róleg þótt
mikið gengi á fyrir krökkunum. Einu
sinni brá þó út af því. Sigga var að
mjólka hana í stóra fötu og byrjaði þá
Skjalda að sparka í sífellu og var
seinast komin aftur í flór í haftinu.
Sigga varð hrædd og þaut í ofboði inn
í bæ til að kalla á hjálp. Eftir þetta
þorði Sigga aldrei að mjólka
Skjöldu um sumarið, en litla mjal-
takonan var líka aðeins tíu ára gömul.
