6-LÖGBERG CENTENNIAL YEAR, FÖSTUDAGUR 14. OCKTOBÉR 1988 Eyvindur of the mountains The title virtually means Eyvindur the Outlaw and is a play named in Icelandic, 'Fjalla Eyvindur.' It is in four acts and is held to be one of the most notable achievements of modern Icelandic literature. It was first produced during 1911 in Copenhagen, then in Reykjavik in 1912, and has been staged more often than any other play in Reykjavik. It has also been produced in Goteborg, Hamburg, Helsinki, London, Munich, Oslo, Riga, New York and Winnipeg. The author, Johann Sigurdjonsson crossed the interior of Iceland to be- come familiar with the area in which Eyvindur lived as an outlaw in mid- eighteenth century Iceland. The story of the play is largely based on historic events. The skill of the author in dealing with the histor- ical treatment of outlaws in the interi- or wastelands, succeeds in raising the level of the tragedy of Eyvindur the Outlaw, to where he captures the sympathy of the audience. Eyvindur, alias Kari is cast as a hero. Facing starvation he is forced to steal sheep. Being condemned as an outlaw he fleas to the central wastelands, traditional home of out- laws. Craving human companionship he finds his way over the height of land into a valley in northern Iceland, where he is unknown, having been a southerner. Under the assumed name of Kari, he is taken into service by a young rich widow Halla. Eventually he be- comes her overseer. Upon learning of Kari's criminal past she falls in love with his true character. Halla's brother-in-law hounds her, when he learns of Kari's identity, in reality wanting to marry him herself. Halla is deeply in love with Kari and insists on sharing her life with him as his commonlaw wife. They leave for the mountains and flee to his old haunts. Islendigarnir upphaflega frá Islandi notuðu gott mál, en af- kommendur þeirra skortuðu tilsögní íslensku. Öll malfrædi var á ensku í skólum landsins. Þó afkomendur lærðu að tala Islensku vóru villur og blönduð ensk orð látin sleppa an leidrettingu. Astadandið í dag er sá, að islenskan er ekki leingur notuð, og mjög fát um mannin sem getur bjar- gað sér í malinnu. Þessi sama saga gerdist í öllum ís- lenskum bygdum, en nú virðist vera kommin nýr áhugi í að kynnast ipálinnu. Kensla hefst viða meðal af- kommenda íslendinga í sambandi við félagsskap. Mér varð starsýnt á frétt í ensku mælandi blaði sem rittaði grein um ársfund Grettirs Félag á Lundar. Petta félag var stofnað 1912 og sygraði árlega um langt skeið, á íp- trótta móti Isledingdagsinns, sem var haldin her í Winnipeg borg. Það er sérkennilegt að afkomendur islendinga hánga med gretti's taki á gomlum félags nöfnum. Minnist BETEL í erfðaskrám yðar live in the area and have two chil- dren. On both occasions Halla feels compelled to end their lives. Twice they are discovered and forced to flee deeper into the mountain wilderness. The last act depicts them in a primitive hut, facing each other with a week old storm raging outside cut- ting them off from all food. They are starving and while love is still there, hunger, doubts and recriminations lead them to seek death in the snow. To capture the background to the pathos of the play it is possible to go by bus over the Sprengisandur of central Iceland, between the two well known glaciers of Hofsjokull and Vatnajokull to end up at Akureyri in the north of Iceland. The bus sched- ule is twice weekly during July and August. Other reasons for taking this trip is to follow the footsteps of the horses in the well known song Ridum, ri- dum rekum yfir sandin, including a ride over the very desolate interior of Iceland which is one central flat plain, devoid of vegetation strewn with almost black boulders, stones, sand and volcanic ash. It is dreary but where else would you go to ex- perience this unusual phenomena of nature? Another reason is relatively few have seen it. e MESSUBOÐ Fyrsta Lúterska Kirkja Pastor Ingthor I.
