The 1990 farm and rural Circle Tour of lceland
This coming August will see a
group of 44 people board the annual
charter to Iceland for a 14 day tour
around the country. It will be an his-
toric and scenic adventure and the
first tour of its kind to Iceland.
The route takes you from
Reykjavík via pingvellir to
Borgarfjörður for a three night stay
at Hvanneyri agricultural school.
While there, day tours will be made
out to Snæfellsnes and up the valley
to Reykholt and Hvítá (White River).
Then the group goes north to West-
ern Húnavatnssýsla for two days of
touring and sightseeing. On to
Akureyri via Blönduós and Var-
mahlíð, where the group is hosted
by farmers in the valley. A day and
night is spent at beautiful Mývatn
and then en route to Egilsstaðir on
the east side of the country, the
group will visit Húsavík, one of the
northernmost towns, Ásbyrgi, a
geological wonder, and the thunder-
ing Dettifoss, a tremendous water
fall in a glacial river. After a visit to
the Hallormsstaður forestry project,
the tour continues south

Geothermal joint venture
behind Iron Curtain
The political thaw in Eastern Eu-
rope means hot prospects for a new
Icelandic-Hungarian geothermal de-
velopment company, the first joint
venture in which Iceland has been
involved behind the Iron Curtain.
Iceland’s Virkir-Orkint consulting
group - itself a joint venture between
the state-owned National Energy Au-
thority and private Virkir consortium
- has teamed up with Hungary’s Geo
Thermal Co. to market knowhow and
development services elsewhere in the
Eastern bloc. Named Geotherm Ltd.,
their joint venture was launched to
rehabilitate the geothermal district
heating system in Hodmezovásárhely,
a town in south Hungary, after the two
companies had cooperated on a feasi-
bility study for the project. Broadly
speaking, the Icelanders provide
knowhow acquired from home geo-
thermal development and more than
thirty years of contract work in 36
countries, and the Hungarians see to
the applied engineering side.
Geotherm Ltd. is now working on
feasibility studies for a further six
towns in Hungary which, if they prove

to Höfn, on the south east corner of
Iceland. Two nights and a day will be
spent with localhosts, someofwhom
have tasted North American hospi-
tality and are anxious to reciprocate.
Westward via glaciers, lava fields
and green pastures, the group goes
to Skógarfoss for an overnight stop
at the Skógarskóli Edda Hótel. Then
they travel on to Hrunaman-
nahreppur north of Selfoss for over-
night with local people. After a visit
to Geysir (Stokkur is guaranteed to
sprout), beautiful Gullfoss (Golden
Falls) and Hveragerði, the tour ends
in Reykjavík on the 14th day.
The Viking Travel Charter pro-
vides for a three week stay in Ice-
land, so the tour group has the last

seven days on their own. Many wish
to visit friends and relatives and
some will just do their own thing.
Information and prebooking is avail-
able for those who wish to have
accommodation arranged, whether
in a hotel, tourist home or farm holi-
day place. Also, travel by air or bus
is very handy in Iceland.
This is intended to be a fun tour
with lots of opportunity to learn
about the culture and to view many
unforgettable sights. You can de-
pend on great hospitality from thg
Icelanders.
Helgi and Lil Austman (Gimli,
Manitoba, ROCÍBO) areplanning the
tour and will be the tour leaders.
They have been to Iceland four times
and around the country twice. They
have had valuable help in arranging
the tour and booking accommoda-
tion from Agnar Guðnason, the tour
leader for the Agricultural Society of
Iceland (Búnaðarfélag Islands), for
many years and over here with
groups almost annually since 1975.
This has made it possible to obtain a
lower than average price for this first
farm and rural tour from North
America to Iceland. The 14 day tour
cost is $946.00 per person, double
occupancy, and it is more than half
subscribed at present. The tour cost
is, of course, in addition to the char-
ter cost which is $729.00 plus airport
taxes and cancellation insurance.
Anyone interested may write or call
(204-642-8705) Helgi and Lil Aust-
man and should do so promptly as it
is expected that the remaining seats
will be taken before long.
