Congratulations
When I last wrote to you (my letter
appeared in the November 9, 1990 is-
sue), our paper was $10,000 in the red.
A donation of $10 from each of the
1500 subscribers would have wiped
out the debt. But not every subscriber
can comfortably afford another $ 10 on
top of all the other demands that are
made on his or her eamings. So I do-
nated $20, and suggested that those of
us who were in the more financially
fortunate half of the subscription list
do the same. I don’t know how many
responded. But even if only 500 did, it

was enough, and L-H is now debt-free.
I congratulate all of them - including
myself.
Tom Oleson (in his report which
appeared in the July 6th, 1990 issue)
told us of the $20,000 needed to up-
grade the production facilities of L-H.
In my earlier letter I promised you that,
when I was assured the debt was paid
off, I would make a further donation
toward these new facilities. This time, a
donation of $15 from every subscriber
would do it. But, again, not everyone
can comfortably afford $15 - so I sug-
gest that those of us who consider our-
selves in the more fortunate half of the
subscription list, donate at least $30. In
fact, I think $50 would be better, just in
case only 500 of us are able to respond
to the need.
My cheque for $50 is enclosed.
You deserve much praise for the ex-
cellence of L-H. I should, however, like
to see more side-by-side English and
Icelandic versions of the same articles,
stories, and poetry, with interpretive
and explanatory notes where necessary
or appropriate. I realize this would re-
quire more space and more work, and
mighteven raise the cost of production,
which would then have to be passed on
to the subscribers. But, surely, the edu-
cational benefit would be worth it. I
even enjoy that silly “Sigga Vigga” car-
toon strip!
I applaud you, and I wish you and
our Lögberg-Heimskringla well.
Yours, very sincerely,
Ed Eggertson
