From Beneath the Weeds voted best this year Guðrún Helgadóttir, MP, received this year’s Nordic Children’s Literature Award for her book entitled Undan illgresinu, or From Beneath the Weeds, published by Iðunn. Guðrún is the first Icelandic children’s book author to receive this award. The Nordic Association of School Librarians gives out the award, which is intended to encourage the publication of quality children’s books, increase initiative and diversity in publication, and to contribute to the advancement of children’s literature in the Nordic countries. The award will be presented at the Nordic Book and Library Convention in Göteborg, Sweden, this fall. Community-based Service to assist public in dealing with Government in Manitoba A Community Access Office on Sargent Avenue officially opened on May 14th to help make govern- ment programs, agencies and departments more available to the public. ‘This office is based in the community and it wih provide valuable assistance in two ways,” said Cul- ture, Heritage and CitizensHip Minister Bonnie Mitchelson, “People who feel overwhelmed by gov- emmentprocesses will have someone to help thent out. The office will also help sensitize govemment departments and agencies.” An outreach officer and a receptionist will be located at Unit 7-794 Sargent. Practical advice on govemment programs will be provided. A contmunity-based office was one of the recom- mendations made in the province’s Policy for a Multicultural Society. The Community Access Of- fice will serve individuals who require assistance, “I’m very pleased this office is open to help the public access govemment programs that have been set up to benefit the people of the province,” said Mitchelson. A remarkable student Brooke Ayden, 17 years old, of St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of Bonnie and Dennis Aydcn and the granddaughter of Þorbjörg (Bobbi) and the late Víglundur (Bill) Davidson, of Winnipeg, has achieved a remarkable number of awards, hon- ours and scholarships in her graduating year from high school. This spring, she won the Athletic Scholarship to Northwestern Univer- sity, in Chicago, to study Bio-mcdical Engineering; she was selected by the faculty of her school to be a membcr of the Honor Society for her scholastic achievements as well as a member of the Tri-M Honor Society, which is an honours musical award for hcr cello and violin; and the U S Army has cho- sen her to be the recipient of their Scholar-Athlete Award for her school. Brooke is also on two All-Star State teams, one for soccer and the other for field hockey.
