Lögberg-Heimskringla - 05.06.1992, Blaðsíða 2
2 • Lögberg-Heimskringla • Föstudagur 5. júní 1992 From When to Whoro by John K. Hjalmarson Lately, there have been so many enjoyable articles on Icelandic tradi- tions in Lögberg-Heimskringla, that I feel compelled to express my apprecia- tion and gratitude to the authors for their contributions. “The Life and Death of Little Iceland” by John Kimantas certainly left no doubt about the trials and tribulations of our pio- neerforefathers on Hecla Island, which has been in the news recently in re- spect to the INL convention. In a lighter vein, butequally as inter- esting, was Dr. Bjöm Jónsson’s recount- ing of a “Þorrablót at Wynyard”. Hav- ing been brought up in Kandahar, the next-door neighbour town, many years ago, the article made me “live a little” so to speak. Everyone living and work- ing in Kandahar spoke Ice-landic - the banker, the postman, the station agent were no exceptions, even though they were not of Icelandic descent. I had to go to school to learn English, but that was no problem as my uncle, the school inspector Bjom Hjalmarson, rodeherd on my studies. Bemard Skagford de- scribed Bjom’s attributes so well in his article printed in the 27th of March edition. I thank him for his flattering but sincere remarks. My Icelandic sure needs a refresher course. How about that Sigga Vigga? Then history became so much more real in Carolyn Casey’s narrative about Fred Goodman’s participation in the construction of the Alaska Highway. Now we Canadians and Americans travelling this memorable route can be reminded of its Icelandic contributor and wish him a happy trip to the anni- versary festivities. These, and so many other articles, certainly do much to heighten the pride of succession to an Icelandic and Viking heritage. I was inspired to do some research on where and why the immigrants from Iceland gravitated to Emigration from Iceland to the Americas and Sites of Settlements in Progression 1850 To Spanish Forks, Utah, 16 in all from Iceland 1863 To Brazil, 4 with 34 in 1873 from Iceland 1870 To Washington Island, Wisconsin, 20 families 1872 To Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 200 by 1874 from Iceland 1873 To Muskoka, Ontario, 115 from Iceland, in 1899 - 5 families remained 1874 To Shawano County, Wisconsin, from Milwaukee, 1880 none remain 1875 To Nebraska from Milwaukee and Iceland 1874 To Kinmount, Ontario, 365 from Iceland 1875 To Markland, N.S., by 1880 - 210 from Kinmount & Iceland 1875 To Minneapolis, Minn., 800 from Milwaukee, Shawano County & Iceland 1875 To New Iceland, Man., 285 from Kinmount, Muskoka, Milwaukee and Iceland, by 1900 population about 2500 1877 To Winnipeg, Man., from New Iceland, Iceland & Pembina. This took me to the National Archives of Canada where I found a booklet entitled Tracing Your Ice- landic Family Tree written by Eric Jonasson and printedby the Wheatfield Press in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In screening the microfilms of ships’ manifests of emigrants from Iceland, I discovered how and when my grand- father came to America, together with his wife and two children, one of whom was my father. An interesting item in Jonasson’s booklet was a summary of locations in North America where Icelanders set- tled. Details are as follows.
