Aino, (The Kalevala Finish) - Marilyn

Shirley McCreedy; Jytte, (The Danish
Twister Sister) - Randi Tollefsen;
Ragnhild, (The Norwegian Seeress) -
Carolynn Halmoy; and Svea, (The
Swedish Seawardess) - Carol
Simonson.
Woody (Chief Big Small Wood)
was played by Bill Helgason and the
narrator for the play was Ken
Skundberg (The Voice of Norway).
Hedenstierna, the author, director,
and self-admitted Swedish cornball,
describes his creation as a ribald and
runic comedy. The audience was
overheard using several
colourful adjectives of
their own to describe this
piece of work, as Göran
himself encouraged each
one of them to do. The
play chronicles the voy-
age, discovery, and settle-
ment at L’ Anse Aux
Meadows. Göran’s hope
is that this play may be
the start of an amateur
theatre group operating
out of the Scandinavian
Centre.
The whole evening
was an overwhelming
success.
Thank you Scandi-
navian Choir for a mar-
vellous performiance and
all the best with your upcoming
“Tribute to Edvard Grieg” night com-
ing up on October 29th at 7:30 p.m.
at the Centre.
A special thank you to Göran
Hedenstierna for going the extra mile
with his superlative effort in this
event. Göran not only wrote and
acted in the play but he also built the
set and most of the props used to
make it such a success. This looks
like it could be the start of a long and
prosperous writing and acting career
for him.
Over one hundred people
turned out to enjoy the
festivities of the annual
Leif Eirickson Ball on Friday,
October 8th at the Scandinavian
Centre in Winnipeg.
The Scandinavian Choir led the
programme and received a stand-
ing ovation for their excellent per-
formance. Magnus Eliason pro-
posed the traditional toast to the
Viking Spirit. The reply came in a
somewhat less traditional form by
way of a three act play entitled
“Leifthe Lucky”.
The play was the product of the
fertile, creative and comical mind
of our own Göran Hedenstierna.
The first act he entitled “Lef the
Bad Slimes Row!”, which featured
our noble vikings at sea off the coast
of our present day Newfoundland.
The second act entitled “Veenland,
my Veenland!” took place at L’ Anse
aux Meadows and the third act at the
same location portrayed by the ladies
only under the heading of “The
Naughty Ladies of Shady L’ Anse aux
Meadows”.
The mythical viking cast (The
Veekings) consisted of: Holger, (The
Danish Twister) - Karl Sorensen;
Leif, (The Norwegian Hardbanger) -
The Viking longship at sea was a wonderful set for the crew
on their gruelling Atlantic voyage.
