Remembrance, Respect, Responsibility
By Helga Sigurdson
Presldent, Lundar Chapter INL
emembrance and respect were
the theme at a dinner at DJ’s
Restaurant hosted by the
Icelandic National League when
plaques were presented to retiring
members. Oli Narfason, past presi-
dent, spoke warm wprds of thanks
and farewell to several veterans.
Evelyn Thorvaldson will retum to
be with her husband Gordon in their
Nassau paradise.
Melanie Magnusson will continue
her studies to further her career.
Hulda Daníelsdóttir will have
more time to be with her adorable
baby daughter, Solveig, who bright-
ened our meetings when Hulda
brought her.
And I — to my memories.
Oli’s words brought back a flood
of memories. It took me back many
years to the time when Skúli
Jóhannsson was president and
Grettir Johannson treasurer of the
INL and meetings were held in
Stefan and Olla Stefansson’s house
on the little, short street in Winnipeg
that was always hard to find.
I attended the meetings with my
husband Johann (Joe) spending my
time in the kitchen with Olla where
she made delicious delicate pönnu-
kökur “til að hafa með kaffinu” in
beautiful china cups. I would bring
Icelandic brown bread made by the
Lundar Bakery and rúllupylsa when
available or ham.
My aunt Freda Danielson was sec-
'retary and had served for many years.
She thought that there should be a
change. She knew of someone who
would be good and capable - if she
could convince her to take office.
This was Sigurlin Roed - and she
would and the rest i.s history.
Sigurlin- guided and supported many
presidents, among them my husband
in his term of office in 1979.
Many changes have taken place.
The league has grown and expanded
from a home in the city of Winnipeg,
Manitoba, to other provinces in
Canada and cities of the United
States.
Annual meetings (Þjóðræknis-
þing) through a change in the consti-
tution can now take place in other

To serve on the executive and
work for the INL is a labour of love.
It gives you the opportunity to fur-
ther your heritage, culture and kin-
ship.
It will cost you part of your time,
involve your brain and heart and
touch your pocket book - especially
at convention time.
Your reward will be the satisfac-
tion of knowing that you did your
share to preserve the past and to
ensure the future of the INL for your
children.
Memories - Lincoln called them
the mystic chords of memory.
“Those delicate strands that con-
nect us all, one to another. They
make our joys more meaningful, our
sorrows more bearable and in the
end - they are all that really matters
- the human bond.”
I have enjoyed immensely my
many years of association with the
Þjóðræknisfélag and especially my
time on the executive. God bless you

105th Birthday Celebrated
There was a time when Runa Amason wondered if she would ever see
her lOOth birthday. Now, on the occasion of her 105th birthday she
was inviting everyone present to come again next year for her 106th.
Family and friends gathered to wish her well on October 20, 1993,
when the Betel Home honoured her on this special day with a birthday
cake and coffee party. Clara Steffenson, member of the Board of Directors
of Betel, extended greetings from the Board. Greetings also came from
numerous government dignitaries, as'well as, from others present at the
occasion.
Runa enjoys good health and continues to display her zest for life with
purpose and good humour. D.N.
