Where Are They Now?
Ihave often wondered about a col-
umn entitled “Where are they
now?” for L-H readers. I believe
it would be of great interest to know
the whereabouts of some of our for-
mer friends of the Icelandic communi-
ty - especially those known to a great
many people as “real workers”. Here
are a few lines on the Vopnfjord
Family (Len and Karen) received just
recently and written January 13/95.
The Vopnfjords’ moved to Victoria BC
several years ago - taking with them,
their musical talents and energy. Our
loss - was BC’s gain. Len is the son of
the late Axel Vopnfjord, and Karen is
the daughter of Geraldine Thorlakson,
member of the BC Chapter of the INL
and of the Sólskin Society.
Len and Karen spent one month,
beginning January 21, in the
Philippines. There, they were provid-
ing assistance in the development of
municipal land use plans; recycling
and waste management - in co-opera-
tion with the Canadian Urban
Institute. They, along with their son
Lindy, were in Iceland in June of ‘94.
They enjoyed the “ring-road” trip by
car and camper, rode Icelandic horses
at midnight, visited Vopnafjörður, and
did a lot of singing. Karen calls it “a
most enjoyable trip”. Karen also
advises of her mother, Geraldine
Thorlakson’s, whereabouts. She writes
that “Gerry is in Arizona for a few
months, basking in the sun.” Len and
Karen continue to be a busy family
and becoming an Afí and Amma has
only added to their energies. Their son
Kristjan is now a teacher, following in
the footsteps of his late paternal Afi
Axel and his maternal Amma
Geraldine. Kristjan is married to
Charlene Dyck and they are the par-
ents of a three year old daughter
Berkley. Lindy is a musician. He is
preparing to cut another CD (all his
own material), and is planning a tour
this summer, which may include
Winnipeg. Karen and Len write that
“they miss their Icelandic friends in
Winnipeg and enjoy their weekly
Lögberg-Heimskringla".

In this web of madness; he is forever
caught.
She dreams of sunshine trapped in
amber gold.
Sees his soul of lightning flashing blue.
Deep in sleep she hears his vow
of a love so powerful and true.
Awake she quickens at his echo,
heart shouts he’s real, tells her to wait
but her head says it’s time; get on with
her life.
To dream is her destiny — illusion her
fate.
Yet every morn she still believes so
strong
when his promise ends her dreams at
dawn.
And every night he keeps on trying
to capture a dream that’s all but gone.
Nightly he searches through mazes of
mist.
Frantically praying: God, let him suc-
ceed.
Each night she cries out in soulful
tears
as he fills her dreams with ravenous
need.
Seemingly forever time does pass this
way
until the day they meet as if by acci-
dent.
Tears fiil his eyes and doubt his mind.
Her body trembles with love that’s •
meant.
Two hearts stop dead then beat as
one.
With gazes locked; her very breath he
steals.
Unmoving in spellbound stupor they
stare.
Shaking, he reaches out to see if she
is real.
Crossed-fingers, closed eyes, an
unending wish.
A mere whisper of breath from the
touch that she craves.
Soft sighing angels on wings flutter
near
and hope washes through her in pow-
erful waves.
Unbreathing she waits but the touch
never comes.
With soul crushing dread she opens
her eyes
to stare unbelieving at the fading
mirage
down on his knees, her name but a
cry.
From nightmarish dreaming they wake
bathed in sweat.
Utterly alone in a darkness so deep.
Each dream holding promise equal to
loss;
alone in their beds, they smile as they
weep.
Staving off lowliness, fighting tempta-
tion,
battling time for a love none stronger
Willing to wait, loving only in dreams
Such is the love of one soul for
another.

Jt\. of Guttormur and Jensina
Guttormsson. She is the daughter of
Gail Foster (nee Dahlman), and
niece of June Arnason. Reneé has
written many poems and is now
completing her first fictional story.
