As a longtime subscriber to your
excellent publication, I know you
are interested in news of the
accomplishments of western Icelanders.
This letter is to advise you that my son,
Mark Asmundson was elected to the posi-
tion of Mayor of Bellingham in the elec-
tion of November 7.
The Icelandic population of this city of some 60,000 is substantially less
than one percent. I feel that this last election is worthy of note as Mark is the
third individual of Icelandic descent,
having been preceded by Sig Hjaltalin
and John Westford each of whom
served for twelve years. Mark has been
elected to serve four years commenc-
ing January 1, 1996, which will result
in having Icelandic Mayors for 28
years in this century.
The final vote count gave Mark
9,638 votes to his opponent’s 7,748
votes. His opponent who was well
financed in this election by a special
interest group of realtors and land
developers had announced for the
position in early January and carried
on a vigorous campaign for ten
months before the election, whereas
Mark did not enter the race until some
four months before the election.

retired two years ago.
