Kötturínn and Kisa
Kötturinn is a tomcat, and Kisa is
his wife. They live in an alley,
near the fishing village of
Bolungarvík, in Iceland.
They were the leaders of a gang of
cats, who kept the alley free of fish
heads and tails, so that the pretty vil-
lage would not stink too much.
Their job was to see that the fish
parts were never left to rot in the streets
near the factory, where the fish are put
into cans.
Kötturinn and Kisa were very
important, and all the other cats had to
report to them each day, with their
findings.
Kötturinn was huge and fat, so if he
saw a skinny cat, he knew that cat was
not good at finding fish, so he sent him
out more often than the rest, to search
for scraps. Each cat gave his best scrap
of the day to Kisa, who fed them to
Kötturinn.
When the days have been good, and
the cats are happy, you can hear them
all lined up in the alley, “caterwauling”,
at the moon — singing love songs.
Little Gunna

house, on a short street. The house has
a little cupboard, where a little man,
Jón, lives with his little wife, Gunna.
They have a little dog, “Hundur” and a
little horse “Hestur”. They are all so lit-
tle, people think they are mice. They
think Hundur is a flea, and Hestur is a
bug.
Sometimes, if the children in the
house are very still and quiet, they can
see little Gunna and little Jón come out
of the cupboard, riding Hestur, and
Hundur follows them, as their guide.
They sneak into the pantry, and take
crumbs of vínarterta, and pieces of
harðfisk, slices of rúllupylsa, back to
their little cupboard.
